In addition to being the frontline protector in defense, Gabriel also serves as Arsenal's best weapon in attack. His injury will be a significant setback for "The Gunners."

Although possessing a highly capable depth in the defensive line, Arsenal will still feel the impact of the injury to their key defender Gabriel Magalhaes. Gabriel's role and influence cannot currently be replaced by any player in the "Gunners" squad, including his defensive partner William Saliba.
Arsenal is truly unfortunate. Gabriel did not need to travel far while fulfilling his international duty with Brazil. The friendly match between Brazil and Senegal took place at Arsenal's home ground, the Emirates Stadium, in London, England. Unfortunately, Gabriel had to be substituted in the 64th minute while limping.
After being examined, the 27-year-old defender is experiencing muscle issues in his right thigh. "Bad? I don't know. He has sustained an injury to the inner thigh muscle. We are truly sorry, very disappointed. When a player is injured, you can only hope for a quick recovery," said Brazil's Coach Carlo Ancelotti after the match, Saturday (15/11/2025).
The recovery time for thigh muscle injuries is uncertain, depending on the severity. The recovery period typically ranges from one week to more than eight weeks. Gabriel also experienced a thigh injury in the middle of the year and was forced to be sidelined for about three months.
Gabriel's injury is particularly worrying for Arsenal. The defender has been vital over the past five years. Just look at Opta data, which shows that Mikel Arteta's team has a 64.3 percent win rate with Gabriel since September 2020. Without him, Arsenal have only recorded a 40 percent win rate.
That role has become increasingly crucial this season. Arsenal has conceded only five goals in 17 matches since the beginning of the season. Their defense is touted as the best in Europe. If there is one name that deserves the most credit for that performance, it is Gabriel. He has recorded the most minutes and has also appeared in all of those matches.

Remarkably, Gabriel is relied upon in two penalty areas simultaneously. His ability in aerial duels is also utilized by Arsenal in the offensive aspect with set-piece schemes. Gabriel is always the primary target during corner kicks and free kicks. The results have been effective; he has already contributed to five goals for "The Gunners" across all competitions.
Often, Arteta only utilizes Gabriel's presence in the penalty area to disrupt the opponent's defensive structure. Other Arsenal players can execute opportunities more freely. Thanks to his presence, 12 goals, or 60 percent of Arsenal's total goals in the Premier League, have been scored from set pieces.
Jamie Carragher, a renowned former Premier League defender, even compared Gabriel's influence to that of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. "You could argue that Gabriel is the most influential player in the league right now. When you look at Arsenal's defensive record and his threat from set pieces, he's that important," he told Sky Sports in late October.
The loss of Gabriel is already a significant blow for Arsenal, especially with the timing being as unfortunate as it is now. After the international break, they will face a series of challenging fixtures. This includes two London derby matches in the domestic league against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, as well as a Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.
Arteta will certainly not panic as much as in previous seasons when there were few equivalent options from the bench. Thanks to significant investments in the summer, Arsenal now has two players who can fill Gabriel's vacancy, namely Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie.
Mosquera has already proven to provide stability in Arsenal's defense. He temporarily filled the role of Saliba, who had to be absent due to injury at the beginning of the season. Despite being only 21 years old, the Spanish player is undaunted when facing major matches. This is evidenced by his very solid performance at Liverpool's home ground, Anfield Stadium.

According to former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, Mosquera is the most suitable figure to replace Gabriel. However, the task ahead will be more challenging than before due to the heightened expectations. "Mosquera must perform exceptionally well because Gabriel and Saliba are the best defensive duo in Europe," Keown explained.
The problem is, unlike in the back line, the loss of Gabriel in the attacking side will be difficult to compensate for. No one can dominate in the opponent's penalty area like that Brazilian national team defender, including Saliba. Since Gabriel moved to Arsenal, no defender has been more productive in the league than he has (20 goals).
A heavy task awaits Arteta. The coach must find a way to avoid becoming overly reliant on set pieces until Gabriel returns. Arsenal needs to create more opportunities from open play. Fortunately, many of their forwards are set to return from injury, including Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke.
That task is not easy for them at all. Arsenal is still struggling to score goals from open play this season. Aside from set pieces, they have only managed to score eight goals in league matches. They are only better than seven teams. This is far from the standards of rival teams, such as City (20) or Liverpool (16).
If they cannot fill the gap left by Gabriel, Arsenal's championship chances will be at risk. "The Gunners" are indeed still at the top of the temporary standings with 26 points from 11 matches. However, City, which appears to be returning to its best form, is ready to seize the top position at any time. (AP/REUTERS).
