It's not just tactics; a coach sometimes achieves victory thanks to sharp intuition. Substitutions were key to PSG's victory over Barcelona.

BARCELONA, THURSDAY – Hansi Flick may regret his decision to make substitutions in the second half. That decision led to disaster as the host Barcelona succumbed 1-2 to Paris Saint-Germain at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, Thursday (2/10/2025) early morning WIB, in the continuation of the UEFA Champions League. Both teams were tied until halftime, but the intuition of the coaches made the difference in the match's outcome.
In addition to being skilled in devising tactics, a coach is also required to be astute in reading the match situation. This was demonstrated by PSG coach Luis Enrique, who made a precise substitution in the second half. Enrique took a gamble by withdrawing playmaker Fabian Ruiz and bringing in Goncalo Ramos.
From a tactical perspective, the substitution clearly raises questions. How could a playmaker be withdrawn at a time when the team needs him to create opportunities for additional goals? Even if a forward had to be brought in, Enrique could have substituted another player, not Ruiz.
However, Enrique has his own thoughts regarding that decision. It is evident that Ramos ultimately emerged as the hero of PSG's victory thanks to his goal at the end of the match, capitalizing on a precise cross from Achraf Hakimi.
"It's very disappointing to concede in the last minute and lose at home. They played better in the final stages, in the second half. We started the game better, but they played better in the second half," said Barcelona defensive midfielder Frenkie De Jong in a post-match interview with Movistar.
Enrique's decision to play Ramos in the second half is likely influenced by his tendency to be a game-changer. In recent seasons, Ramos has developed a habit of scoring goals even when starting the match from the bench. This advantage has allowed him to equal Kylian Mbappe's record as the substitute player with the most goals in PSG's history, totaling 16 goals.
Realizing Ramos's hidden ability to change the outcome of matches, Enrique decided to follow his intuition as a coach. This is what sets Enrique apart from most other top European coaches. A genius coach is not only remembered for his ability to strategize gameplay but also sometimes for his careful decisions when substituting players.
"Playing here (in the Champions League) is complicated, far from easy. You have to know how to manage the match and deal with complications," said Enrique.
The opposite was done by Barca's coach, Hansi Flick, who decided to replace left-back Gerard Martin with Alejandro Balde in the second half. Balde was responsible for PSG's winning goal as he failed to close down Hakimi's movement in the area he was guarding. When PSG launched a counterattack, Balde moved towards the center, which allowed Hakimi ample space to penetrate the heart of Barca's defense before delivering a pass to Ramos.
Martin appeared less sharp when joining the attack. For this reason, Flick decided to play Balde, who is more explosive. However, this decision carries risks considering that Balde has just recovered from a long injury, and his ability to read the game has not fully returned.
In addition to player substitutions, Flick's intuition also proved blunt as he continued to force Barca to play with a high defensive line. This approach aimed to lure PSG players into an offside trap. Balde's awkward movement, as he was late to align with the other three defenders, thwarted the offside trap.
A high defensive line also serves as a means for Barca to play pressing. This was evident in the opening goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 19th minute. The ball, resulting from a weak pass from Vitinha, was successfully intercepted by Lamine Yamal before he passed it on to Ferran.
However, when facing a team filled with fast and technical players like PSG, a high defensive line is always vulnerable to quick and precise counterattacks. PSG's equalizing goal was created when left-back Nuno Mendes broke through Barcelona's midfield with a simple pass.
Mendes' movement created a situation where three PSG players faced off against three Barca players in the final third of the defense. PSG's young striker, Senny Mayulu, then took advantage of this situation by scoring a reply goal in the 38th minute.
The victory over Barca solidifies PSG's position in the competition at the top of the Champions League group stage. With this, "Les Parisiens" have accumulated six points from two victories. PSG is currently in third place in the standings, with Bayern Munich at the top and Real Madrid in second place.
Barcelona is currently ranked 16th out of 36 teams after securing one victory against Newcastle United and suffering one defeat to PSG. "Last year we started with a loss in Monaco. This year we began at Newcastle's home with a victory. Today we lost, in a difficult match. We faced two very tough opponents," said Barcelona defender Eric Garcia. (AFP)
