Newcastle's downfall at Camp Nou serves as a significant warning for the next teams looking to challenge Barcelona. At home and in the knockout phase, Barca is extremely formidable.

BARCELONA, WEDNESDAY - Barcelona reminds that Camp Nou Stadium and the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League are a deadly combination for visiting teams. After nearly seven years of not being heard in that phase of the tournament, the intimidating nature of Camp Nou is finally acknowledged again. It was Newcastle United's turn to experience that traumatic encounter.
The last time Barca played at Camp Nou in the knockout stage of the Champions League, their star Lamine Yamal was only 11 years old. That moment occurred in May 2019, when Barca defeated the English representative Liverpool 3-0 in the first semifinal match. They have not returned since then.
Many events have occurred, ranging from the Covid-19 pandemic, slipping into the Europa League, to the renovation of Camp Nou. This longing was encapsulated when Barca returned to their home ground to host Newcastle in the second match of the round of 16, Thursday (19/3/2026) early morning WIB.
Aided by the burning passion of the home fans, Barca crushed the visitors, 7-2.
Yamal—who finally experienced the atmosphere of Camp Nou on the biggest stage—became one of the heroes of Barca's victory with a contribution of one goal and an assist. His goal was scored through a penalty at the end of the first half. That goal put Barca back in the lead at 3-2, simultaneously undermining the psychology of the visiting team, which had always been able to recover from being behind.

Yamal, who is 18 years old, truly absorbed the energy of the entire stadium into his being. The teenager was so confident that he nominated himself to take the penalty.
"Lamine told me he wanted to take it. When you see his confidence, you will believe in him," said Barcelona's main penalty taker, Raphinha.
With the support of their fans, the team coached by Hansi Flick never wavered against the high intensity of Newcastle. Barca's lead, at scores of 1-0 and 2-1, was briefly interrupted by the actions of winger Anthony Elanga, who scored two goals. However, they always remained calm to start all over again.
"We knew this match would be difficult. They are a team that heavily relies on physical advantages. We managed to overcome that by staying calm and controlling the game better. With fans supporting us like this, it is very hard for them to defeat us at home," said Raphinha, who contributed two goals and two assists.
After renovations since 2023, Camp Nou was actually set to be usable again by the end of November 2025. However, recently, the spectator capacity is still limited to 45,000 seats due to ongoing renovations. Specifically, for the last two matches, including the one earlier, the capacity has been allowed to increase to 62,000 seats.
The significant increase in capacity and the prestige of the tournament have made the atmosphere at Camp Nou feel even more "wild." This historic stadium has always brought good fortune to the home team. Prior to the last match against Liverpool, Barcelona had recorded an unbeaten streak at home for six consecutive seasons in European competitions (32 matches).

Barca's winning momentum came just before halftime, courtesy of a Yamal penalty. However, the key to their success came from a flawless second-half performance. Yamal and his teammates disrupted Newcastle's man-to-man defense with patient play in their own half.
When successfully provoking pressure from the visiting team led by Anthony Gordon, the forward players of Barca rotated their positions. As a result, Newcastle's defensive system became chaotic. The speed of Barca's attackers, Yamal and Raphinha, became a nightmare for the central defensive duo of Newcastle, Dan Burn and Malick Thiaw, who often played a relatively high defensive line.
"We played too directly in the first half. They were good in transition and we were not good enough. We could control the match better in the second half. I asked the players to control the ball more and play from the back more often, and it worked well," said Flick regarding his instructions during the halftime break.
Barca dominated completely during the second half. They added four goals in less than half an hour, leading 7-2 by the 72nd minute. Forward Robert Lewandowski (two goals) and midfielder Marc Bernal also contributed goals. Meanwhile, Newcastle failed to produce a shot from after halftime until the 80th minute.
Barca advanced to the quarter-finals with an aggregate lead of 8-3. They will face fellow Spanish team, Atletico Madrid, which qualified with an aggregate lead of 7-5 over Tottenham Hotspur. Both Barca and Atletico eliminated English representatives on their way to the last eight.

Newcastle manager Eddi Howe said the final score did not reflect the full game.
"It is very strange to summarize this match because I think we were perfect in the first half. The most disappointing thing is that we did not maintain that level in the second half. I am not sure our psychology has recovered after conceding just before halftime," he said. (AP/REUTERS)
