In any part of the world, the presence of misfortune always has its limits. However, this is not the case with MU. Their misfortunes seem to come without end.

CLEETHORPES, THURSDAY — Three matches into the new season and not a single victory has been achieved. Such is the tragic fate of Ruben Amorim in his first full season as manager of Manchester United. The misfortune of MU and Amorim feels increasingly absurd after being eliminated by Grimsby Town in the second round of the English League Cup at Blundell Park Stadium, Cleethorpes, Thursday (28/8/2025) early morning WIB. Although they managed to force a 2-2 draw in regular time, the "Red Devils" ultimately lost in a grueling penalty shootout.
The result led to MU's premature elimination from the English League Cup. This marks the third time in the last 30 years that MU has been eliminated in the second round. In the 1995-1996 season, MU was eliminated by the third-tier team York City. Then, in the 2014-2015 season, it was another third-tier team, MK Dons, that brought similar sorrow to MU.
Facing Grimsby, who competes in League 2 or the fourth division of the English football pyramid, MU failed to perform as expected. Amorim appeared to underestimate Grimsby by rotating up to eight key players from their match against Fulham last weekend. Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Luke Shaw, who served as defenders, were replaced by Tyler Fredricson, Harry Maguire, and Ayden Heaven.
The change made Maguire the only senior defender in this match. Heaven, a defender acquired from Arsenal last January, performed quite well, but not so for Fredricson. The 20-year-old player appeared less composed and was often drawn into the movements of the Grimsby attackers, leaving gaps on the left side of the defense. This gap was exploited by Grimsby when they took the lead in the 22nd minute through a shot by Charles Vernam.

Eight minutes later, it was the turn of goalkeeper Andre Onana to make a fatal error. Onana failed to catch the high ball from Vernam's cross. The ball slipped from Onana's grasp and was immediately seized by Tyrell Warren, allowing Grimsby to double their lead.
Amorim appeared frustrated with his team's performance. He repeatedly shouted at the players to be in the correct positions. Another issue that troubled Amorim was the tendency of several MU players to hold onto the ball for too long and to foul Grimsby players who were playing aggressively in front of their own supporters.
"The way we started the game without any intensity, we were completely lost," said Amorim, as quoted by BBC Sport.
The players' hesitation in positioning themselves, necessitating constant instructions from Amorim on the sidelines, further validates the circulating issues regarding MU's poor performance. Recently, Amorim has frequently been the subject of speculation concerning the players' ability to execute his tactics.

Despite failing to score after four shots in the first half, MU was able to bounce back after the break. Amorim utilized the allowance of five player substitutions to boost his team's attacking line. He brought in attacking players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee, and Bruno Fernandes.
Their presence enhanced the performance of MU's attacking line. The number of accurate shots they made in the second half increased to five. Mbeumo kept MU's hopes alive with a low shot goal in the 75th minute. MU ultimately succeeded in equalizing through Maguire's header a minute before the end of regular time. However, MU's resurgence turned out to be false.
A tie score forced the winner to be determined through a penalty shootout. The penalty drama extended for two rounds. On the second occasion, Mbeumo failed to fulfill his duty. In addition to Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha had already failed the fifth penalty. Meanwhile, on the Grumsby side, Clarke Oduor also failed.
"The players performed exceptionally well. They deserve all the praise, all the accolades, and the commendations they will receive. This is something we have long strived for, which is to restore this club to the competitive landscape," said Grimsby Manager, David Artell.

Artell successfully led his team to make history by defeating MU, which is three divisions above them. Conversely, for MU, this dark defeat may be difficult to forget.
MU's misfortune of not having secured a single victory this season has become increasingly complicated. The shocking defeat to Grimsby felt utterly absurd. Moreover, Mbeumo and Cunha, who failed in the penalty shootout, are an expensive striker duo that MU has just acquired. It is hard to imagine what it feels like for Amorim to be thoroughly outsmarted by Grimsby. (REUTERS)
