In Philadelphia, the trauma of defeat against the Brazilian team awaits Chelsea once again. This time, Palmeiras is ready to eliminate "The Blues" from the Club World Cup.

PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY — Chelsea's performance continues to improve after being defeated by the Brazilian club Flamengo in the group stage. Ahead of the quarter-finals of the 2025 Club World Cup, "The Blues" are confident with their strategic formula and new players. The problem is, they are awaited by another Brazilian representative, namely Palmeiras.
After experiencing a negative ordeal due to the postponement of the match in Charlotte in the previous round, Chelsea will play again in Philadelphia. They will face Palmeiras in a match for a semifinal ticket at Lincoln Financial Field Stadium, Saturday (5/7/2025) at 08:00 WIB.
For Cole Palmer and his teammates, the stadium evokes trauma. They were defeated by Flamengo 1-3 at that stadium about two weeks ago. Chelsea seems to have no choice but to face a Brazilian team again. Meanwhile, Palmeiras advanced by winning against fellow Brazilian representative, Botafogo, in the round of 16.
Chelsea midfielder, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, stated that his team must not repeat the same mistakes as in the group stage. "We do not want to underestimate Palmeiras. We have seen that South American teams are truly strong in this tournament," he said, as quoted on Chelsea's official website.
Chelsea should be cautious with their prospective new player, Estevao. The 18-year-old winger is set to give his all as he potentially plays his last match with Palmeiras. Estevao will join the Blues immediately after the Club World Cup.

Chelsea had actually agreed to purchase Estevao from Palmeiras for around 34 million euros (IDR 650 billion) in the summer of 2024. However, Palmeiras included a clause allowing the player to stay for another year and also participate in the Club World Cup.
Estevao is one of the "wonder kids" from Brazil. He was called up to the senior national team at just 17 years old, shortly after appearing in Indonesia during the U-17 World Cup 2023. Former Chelsea player, Willian, stated that Estevao has the potential to become like Barcelona star, Lamine Yamal.
"I hope he shows the potential and qualities he possesses when facing his new club later. We are helping him grow into a man, a professional player. That will be the best moment to say goodbye," said Palmeiras Head Coach Abel Ferreira.
Chelsea will indeed play in the stadium and represent the same country. However, they return with many differences. One of them is that Chelsea will be reinforced by a new striker, Joao Pedro, who has just officially transferred from Brighton and Hove Albion. Pedro is set to potentially make his debut.
Pedro has great potential to be a talisman in addressing the threat posed by the Brazilian representative. He is a player who was born and raised in Brazil. The 23-year-old even played for the Brazilian club, Fluminense, in 2019, before moving to England.

Pedro's knowledge of Brazilian football is beyond doubt. Moreover, he arrives with a mission to prove himself. "I am very excited to play for Chelsea, to win all the titles in the tournament. I hope I can help this club," said Pedro, who was purchased by Chelsea for 60 million euros.
Pedro will make Chelsea's strategy even more unpredictable. He can play in the attacking midfielder position or as a central striker. This flexibility assists Maresca in generating a new formula. Moreover, the Blues consistently change their tactical approach in every match throughout the tournament.
For example, when winning 4-1 in the round of 16 against Benfica, Chelsea once again employed two pivots in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with midfielders Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. This duo was showcased in the first group match against Los Angeles FC. The difference lies in the position of the attacking midfielder.
Enzo Fernandez, who usually pairs with Caicedo as a defensive midfielder, played in a more advanced position. Chelsea also had three midfielders who could be useful both with and without the ball. This became the key to the Blues' dominance in the midfield. Benfica struggled to develop.
The change forced Palmer to shift from an attacking midfielder position to the left wing. Interestingly, Palmer played very effectively in this unusual position. His combination with wing-back Marc Cucurella on the left side consistently posed the greatest threat to Benfica's defense.

Pedro can replace the role of striker Liam Delap or Fernandez. Pedro's quality, having recorded 10 goals and 6 assists in the Premier League last season, is clearly superior to Delap. Meanwhile, if Pedro plays as an attacking midfielder, Fernandez can return to the anchor position. Chelsea's attack will be more dangerous.
Despite the real threat posed by Chelsea, Palmeiras defender Bruno Fuchs is not afraid at all. The Palmeiras squad arrives without the burden of expectations. "The coach has told us to dream as big as possible (before the tournament), because dreams are free," concluded Fuchs. (AP/REUTERS)
