The highly fluid attacking system of MU has become the most dangerous threat in the English League. No team has yet been able to solve the puzzle posed by Michael Carrick.

The fate of Manchester United has turned around in an instant. From a team that was very inconsistent, they have now become the most consistent team in the English Premier League since being managed by interim coach Michael Carrick. Four consecutive victories against strong teams with different characteristics are a tangible proof of the resurgence of "The Red Devils."
Only Chelsea has been able to match MU's brilliant trend in the league. The difference is that Chelsea has won against mediocre teams, namely Brentford, Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. MU has been more impressive by defeating three traditional "Big Six" teams, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Fulham, which often poses challenges for big teams.
Thanks to this trend, MU is now firmly in the top four and is only three points behind third-placed Aston Villa. They are also favored in the pursuit of a Champions League ticket. "I feel good. I am quite calm about several things. We are in a good position," said Carrick regarding the journey towards the last 13 weeks, Saturday (7/2/2026).
The most interesting aspect of MU's resurgence lies in their front line. Their attacks are highly varied and dangerous. Evidently, Bruno Fernandes and his teammates have scored 10 goals in the last four matches. They have become the second highest-scoring team in the league since Carrick took over the club, only trailing Chelsea (11 goals).

The average productivity of MU has increased significantly, from 1.71 goals under the previous coach, Ruben Amorim, to 2.5 goals. This figure becomes even more remarkable when considering the context of the opponents faced. For instance, they managed to score three times against Arsenal, which is currently regarded as the team with the best defense in Europe, away from home.
So, what makes MU's attack in the Carrick era more dangerous? On paper, the coach has consistently used the same formation in all those victories, which is 4-2-3-1 without a pure striker. He replaced the 3-4-2-1 formation that was heavily relied upon by the previous coach, Ruben Amorim.
Interestingly, the formation is merely theoretical when it comes to the field. The MU players are given the freedom to improvise. Without looking at the formation sheet, it is nearly impossible to determine who the actual central striker of MU is. Their three forwards, Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha, constantly exchange positions according to the situation.
The penalty area is usually the main focal point for teams looking to score goals. Carrick comes with a different perspective. The focus of Manchester United's attack is actually just outside the penalty area. They strive to create combinations outside in order to punish their opponents. As a result, no Manchester United forward is merely passively waiting in the penalty area.
Just look at Casemiro's opportunity from a long-range shot at the beginning of the match against Tottenham. As the midfielder dribbled towards the opponent's goal, three other players in the central area approached him. Cunha, Fernandes, and Amad Diallo created passing space to establish a combination. Only Mbeumo moved into the penalty area, and that was from the wing side.

The striker-less scheme with fluid player positions poses significant challenges for opposing teams. The opposing center-backs will be confused as the players they are marking retreat to the midfield. If they follow them, it will create large gaps in the penalty area. Meanwhile, if they remain stationary, MU will have a numerical advantage in the midfield and can threaten with speculative shots.
Carrick's insight deserves appreciation. He is able to see the advantages of the MU forwards who can perform flexibly in many positions and execute opportunities from the penalty area. "Michael came with the right idea by giving responsibility to the players, the freedom to make decisions on the field," said Fernandes.

The fluidity of Manchester United's attacks has become a great blessing for Fernandes, the creative midfielder. With an unrestricted role in the attacking line and the random and constant movement of the players, he can express his wild ideas. Fernandes is no longer just playing the role of a tempo setter and ball distributor, as he did when positioned as a defensive midfielder by Amorim.
It is reasonable to say that Fernandes seems to be soaring freely in the Carrick era. He has produced 1 goal and 4 assists since the arrival of the coach. Not a single match has passed without his goal contribution. "We know the quality he possesses. He is a team player who can create significant moments," praised Carrick when asked about Fernandes.
Carrick's attacking system has made MU unstoppable so far. This momentum seems likely to continue for a long time. So far, no team has been able to respond to the fluidity of this striker-less tactic. It is not easy to contain Fernandes, Mbeumo, and Cunha simultaneously. All three can pose a threat from both the second line and the penalty area. (AP/REUTERS)
