After slowing down, Liverpool have rediscovered their identity as a strong title contender. Victory over Newcastle makes Liverpool's title victory only a matter of time.

LIVERPOOL, THURSDAY – Liverpool maintained their consistency after securing an important 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Thursday (27/2/2025) early morning Western Indonesian Time. This positive result holds significant meaning for "The Reds." The victory also serves as a strong message that the English Premier League title is merely a matter of time for Liverpool.
While Liverpool secured a full three points, their two closest competitors in the standings, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, held each other to a 0-0 draw in another match. This situation puts Liverpool in an even stronger position, with a 13-point lead over Arsenal in second place as the English Premier League enters its final 10 weeks.
In fact, Liverpool had stumbled in matches against Everton and Aston Villa a few weeks ago. Facing Villa and Everton, Liverpool could only manage a 2-2 draw. "The Reds" did manage to secure a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but that victory was achieved with great difficulty.
Along with the unsatisfactory results, many parties believe Liverpool's performance is declining and threatening their chances of becoming champions. That accusation was then answered by Liverpool by securing two consecutive victories afterward. Those two consecutive victories were achieved against strong teams, Manchester City and Newcastle United.
"The most important thing is that after Everton, Wolves, and Villa, people started doubting us. Then you have to react to that. It’s always easier because people begin to question you. But after City, everyone became so positive, people started feeling confident and complacent," said Liverpool Manager, Arne Slot, after the match.
Slot could only observe his players from the stadium stands as he was still serving a two-match suspension from accompanying the team. Although he could not be directly involved with the players on the field, Slot celebrated Liverpool's two goals scored by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister as if he were right there with them.
The victory over Newcastle continued Liverpool's positive trend, having also won with an identical score of 2-0 against City last week. The difference this time was that Liverpool left Newcastle completely powerless. Throughout the match, not once did Newcastle manage to take a shot on target.

The key to Liverpool's victory, among other things, was dominating the ball with short passes that did not give Newcastle the chance to develop the game. Even if the ball did change hands, Liverpool players were able to quickly win it back and immediately launch a counterattack. Liverpool players were so enthusiastic about chasing the ball wherever it went as if it was a league trophy that had been dropped.
It is no wonder that two consecutive wins over these strong teams also imply the message that Liverpool's title is only a matter of time. Arsenal still has one less game so they have the opportunity to reduce the gap to 10 points. However, Liverpool's consistency is a real threat to Arsenal.
In the remaining 10 matches, Liverpool will face opponents that on paper they can beat. However, there are at least three matches that have the potential to make Liverpool's lead overtaken. The three matches are against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. To maintain their chances of winning, Liverpool must not slip up in these three matches.
"I think the desire to win trophies (drives us forward). We know that this season we might have a chance to win some trophies. So we are very happy to work hard and hopefully we can keep going," said Mac Allister.
Allister was also happy to be able to score again. Liverpool's two goals in this match were contributed by midfielders. As for Szoboszlai, this goal was his second in a row. Previously, the Hungarian national team player also helped Liverpool defeat City. This is valid proof that every line of Liverpool, including the midfielders, can be relied on to break the deadlock.
Amid the high confidence of the supporters that Liverpool only need to wait for the title, Slot does not want his players' concentration to be disturbed by it. He wants them to focus first on facing Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League.
"I will forget about the league table. I forget about the Premier League now until we play Paris Saint-Germain and then I will start thinking about the Premier League again," Slot said. (REUTERS)
