The 2024-2025 season, which ended without a championship title, has initiated a revolution within the management of Juventus. Damien Comolli, a man from Monaco and former President of Toulouse, has been appointed as the new General Manager of "The Old Lady," starting his duties on June 4, 2025. A heavy task looms over Comolli to restore Juventus's championship trend.
The position of general manager is actually very foreign to Juve. Because, so far, Juve has not had that position in the management board. The Old Lady more commonly has a chief executive officer (CEO), then a director of football who is responsible for the operations of the main team and the academy.
Comolli has been handed the position of general manager, which has a direct relationship with Juve's CEO Maurizio Scanavino. Comolli's position, who served as President of Toulouse from 2020 to 2025, is higher than that of Cristiano Giuntoli, who has held the title of Director of Football at Juve since the summer of 2023.
Italian media reported that Giuntoli is set to end his collaboration with Juve when Comolli begins his duties on Wednesday (4/6/2025). Subsequently, Comolli will have full authority to determine the coach for Juve for the 2025-2026 season and to establish the club's transfer policy.
"We proudly welcome Damien (Comolli) to embark on his new adventure with us. His expertise and professionalism will play a crucial role in Juventus's journey to continue growing and developing," said Scanavino in a press statement reported on the club's website, Sunday (1/6/2025).
The main target for Comolli, as assigned by Juventus owner John Elkann, is to bring back the scudetto title that has been absent for the last five seasons. In pursuit of this ambition, Sky Sport Italia reports that Comolli will undertake his first task of determining the future of Juventus' interim coach Igor Tudor. The Croatian tactician has the opportunity to extend his tenure during the Club World Cup in June-July 2025.

The choice to keep Tudor is realistic amid the dwindling stock of winning-minded allenatore. That is due to Antonio Conte's decision to stay at Napoli. In addition, Gian Piero Gasperini also chose to join AS Roma after nine seasons managing Atalanta.
In terms of management, Comolli will have an influence comparable to that of Beppe Marotta during the period of 2010-2018. At that time, Marotta held the position of CEO of Juve, fully accountable to President Andrea Agnelli.
Marotta is a figure who was able to bring Juve back to life after entering a dark period due to the Calciopoli scandal in 2006. Before leaving Juve, Marotta presented seven Italian League titles and twice reached the Champions League final.
Marotta's deft hand in shaping a trophy-laden Juve squad has not been matched by his successors. They are Fabio Paratici, who brought two scudetti, and then Giuntoli.
For example, Giuntoli, although capable of regenerating the squad, spent a significant transfer fee amounting to 355 million euros or approximately 6.55 trillion rupiah. As a result, the new players and coach chosen by Giuntoli only secured a title in the 2023-2024 edition of the Coppa Italia.

Comolli is not a mediocre figure in football management. After failing to pursue his dream of becoming a professional footballer at the AS Monaco Academy in the early 1990s, Comolli quickly shifted his focus to the world of football management.
He had already obtained a UEFA A coaching license by the time he reached his late 20s. AS Monaco entrusted the position of academy manager to Comolli when he was only 31 years old. His dedication to his favorite club led Comolli to establish a close relationship with Arsene Wenger.
Wenger recruited Comolli to be a scout at Arsenal from 1996 to 2004. Undoubtedly, he was the most influential figure behind the scenes of Arsenal's golden generation in the early 2000s.
Subsequently, Comolli held the position of sporting director at Saint-Etienne, then at Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. He brought in Luka Modric for Spurs and Luis Suarez for Liverpool.

After serving as an advisor at the American investment firm RedBird Capital from 2012 to 2018, he returned to club management during the 2018-2020 period by leading the Turkish club, Fenerbahce.
For the past five years, Comolli has led Toulouse to rise from Ligue 2 in France. With transfer funds and salaries not as high as other teams, he delivered Toulouse's first title in the French League Cup in the 2021-2022 season, just one season after being promoted to Ligue 1 in France.
After four seasons in Ligue 1, Toulouse has transformed into a mid-table team. Comolli's tenure at Toulouse concluded with the team finishing in 10th place in the 2024-2025 Ligue 1.
Success at Toulouse is inseparable from the moneyball style adopted by Comolli to recruit players and coaches based on data. Comolli was appointed President of Toulouse influenced by the recommendation of Billy Beane, the originator of moneyball, to RedBird Capital owner Gerry Cardinale.
RedBird acquired a majority stake in Toulouse in 2020. Two years later, RedBird took full control of Italian giants AC Milan.
Although he places great importance on data for bringing in players and coaches, Comolli emphasizes that he does not overlook another essential aspect, which is the club's culture. According to him, player data must be compatible with the club's culture and playing philosophy.

"We are greatly influenced by data in the player selection process. However, we are also very much guided by the club's culture. Data provides us with indications of the character and personality of the players," said Comolli as reported by Tuttosport regarding his experience in Toulouse.
"We certainly watch videos of their games, but that is not enough. We send player recruitment managers to spend 3-5 days getting to know potential new players more deeply. Going to their homes, dining with them, taking them to their favorite restaurants, and meeting their families. That is our way of understanding whether the player fits the club's culture," Comolli, who is 53 years old, continued.
Target players, according to Comolli, must indeed align with the culture and philosophy of the club. However, he emphasized that once players have joined, they are required to become architects for the emergence of a winning culture within the club.
In order to create a team that understands Juve's culture, Comolli will be accompanied by Giorgio Chiellini, the former center-back and captain of Juve. Chiellini will assume the role of Football Strategy Director, reporting to Comolli.
