Ruben Amorim's reign at Man United finally tasted back-to-back wins. A cloud of darkness is increasingly hanging over Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL, SUNDAY — At Anfield Stadium, on Sunday (19/10/2025), Manchester United secured three meaningful points with a 2-1 victory. More than just a win, the "Red Devils" delivered their best performance to achieve their first three points in two consecutive games under Manager Ruben Amorim.
Amorim needs to undergo 51 matches to deliver consecutive victories for MU. Previously, a win in one week would be followed by a draw or a loss in the subsequent week.
The inconsistent cycle ended at the most anticipated football arena for MU supporters, Anfield Stadium. A header from center-back Harry Maguire, capitalizing on an assist from Bruno Fernandes in the 84th minute, was the key to the Red Devils' victory in front of the majority of the rival's supporters.
The victory felt even sweeter as it was achieved in the inaugural duel between the two teams, both of which have won 20 English League titles. MU, at the very least, proved that they are still better than the "Red" team, which holds the title of defending champion.
MU finally ended a nearly nine-year wait for a victory at Anfield in the English League match. The last advantage was achieved on January 17, 2016, through a goal from Wayne Rooney while still managed by Louis van Gaal.
Maguire stated that this victory is something they have long wanted to present to the supporters. In his seven-year career representing MU, he and all the MU players have exerted great effort to consistently achieve victories. However, this has often failed.
"It's not just three points for the club and the team. It's great to get the win against Liverpool," Maguire told Sky Sports after the match.

"Football is about memories and creating special moments. I am confident that all supporters will return home with good memories; we will all go home happy," he added.
Maguire stated that the victory over Liverpool has injected significant motivation to continue winning. As of the eighth week, the Red Devils are still sitting in ninth place. They are six points behind Arsenal, who are at the top of the standings.
Roy Keane, the former captain of MU, believes that the victory over Liverpool is a significant achievement for the MU players. The Red Devils, he continued, deserve to enjoy this result. However, Keane hopes that the MU players do not become fixated on this historic win.
"No matter how poorly Liverpool performs, they create several opportunities that unfortunately lack enough luck. The MU players will head to the training ground tomorrow with a better atmosphere, but they must use this result as a turning point to keep moving forward," said Keane.
MU came out with a very measured game plan from the start. Amorim instructed his players to implement a low block, aka a low defensive line, and then attempted to punish MU with quick counterattacks.
The tactic was already in play just 62 seconds into the match. Bryan Mbeumo scored the opening goal through a lightning-fast attack that the home team's defense could not anticipate.

For 77 minutes, the five defenders of MU displayed remarkable discipline to maintain their lead. Maguire, along with Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, worked together to withstand the onslaught from Liverpool. Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot also coordinated effectively to guard the flanks against the intense pressure from the dominant Red side on the field.
Facing 19 shots, resulting in 2.76 expected goals (xG), MU only conceded thanks to a Cody Gakpo tap-in in the 78th minute. The goal started from a corner kick.
"The key to this victory was sticking to our game plan after they scored the equalizer. They created many chances, and we remained comfortable in anticipating that," said Maguire.
On the other hand, MU produced 12 shots, five of which were on target. Of that total, 10 shots were made inside Liverpool's penalty area.
Another key to MU's victory cannot be separated from the influence of goalkeeper, Senne Lammens. He made five saves. The Belgian goalkeeper played two matches for MU, resulting in victories.
Meanwhile, Liverpool's record of five home victories has finally come to an end. In addition, they are further sinking as they have now suffered four consecutive defeats.
The three consecutive defeats came in the Premier League with identical 1-2 scorelines. The match results were also identical.

Si Merah fell behind early, but they managed to equalize in the final minutes of the match. Just when they could breathe a sigh of relief after overcoming the deficit, Liverpool felt the sting of conceding a goal that led them to finish the match without any points.
"We worked very hard to get back into the match after conceding. We created many opportunities to score the winning goal, but conceding the second goal at a crucial moment was the hardest part," said Liverpool's defender and captain, Virgil van Dijk, as reported by the BBC.
The Dutch-born player believes that the current difficult situation should serve as an important lesson for Liverpool. He emphasizes that all elements of the club and supporters must continue to unite to return to the path of victory.
"We must remain humble, work hard, and maintain our confidence as high as possible. When things feel difficult, it is important for us to be in a mindset of supporting one another. Remember, this is a long season," said Van Dijk.
