None of the six English representatives in the Champions League secured a victory in the first match of the round of 16. The claim of being the best league in the world is also being questioned.

Real Madrid's resounding victory over Manchester City feels like a heavy blow that resonates far beyond the walls of Santiago Bernabeu. The match highlighted the reality of English clubs this season in the Champions League; they are not as good as they believe. In just 24 hours, England's claim as the strongest competition in the world has been shaken, eroded by performances that fall far short of the standards they take pride in.
City, which has long been touted as a symbol of English dominance in Europe, finds itself in a difficult position. City's crushing defeat at the Bernabeu, 0-3, on Thursday (12/3/2026) early morning WIB, occurred just a day after Spurs were beaten by Atletico Madrid 2-5, the defending Premier League champions Liverpool were defeated by Galatasaray 0-1, while Newcastle United drew 1-1 against Barcelona at home.
On the same day, the English Premier League leader, Arsenal, could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against Leverkusen, a club currently occupying the sixth position in the Bundesliga standings. A similar fate befell Chelsea, who were defeated by the French club, Paris Saint-Germain, with a score of 2-5.
The match at the Bernabeu showcased the true spirit of Real Madrid, the Champions League kings with 15 titles. They played with the composure of a team accustomed to facing big occasions. Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat trick, demonstrating Real's sharpness in exploiting City's vulnerability under pressure.
The series of results from the first matches of the round of 16 in the Champions League is not a coincidence, but rather a reflection of a broader situation. Chelsea displayed instability as they collapsed in the second half against PSG.

Liverpool stumbled against a Turkish club, while Arsenal could only manage a draw in Germany, which felt more like a struggle for survival than a statement of ambition. Mikel Arteta's squad needed a last-minute penalty from Kai Havertz to escape defeat after falling behind to a goal from Robert Andrich in the 46th minute.
The claim of the English Premier League as the best league in the world is partly based on the reality of their performance before the round of 16. This season, they have dominated, with six clubs advancing to the round of 16, five of which qualified directly by securing positions in the top eight of the league phase.
Arsenal even performed phenomenally. They made history by achieving a perfect result of eight victories in the league phase. The result in Leverkusen ended that record. Prior to the match, according to the analysis of the Opta supercomputer, Arsenal had an 86.7 percent chance of advancing, Liverpool 79 percent, City 69 percent, Newcastle 36.4 percent, while Spurs had 35.5 percent.
However, after this week's matches, the club that can still be considered to have a significant chance of advancing to the quarter-finals is Arsenal, which will host Leverkusen next week, with a 77.9 percent probability. Liverpool also has a greater chance compared to other teams as they will host Galatasaray at Anfield, with a 53.8 percent chance of qualifying.
As for City, Chelsea, and Spurs, although they will be playing at home, they will face difficulties in overturning their deficits. City has only a 9.4 percent chance of advancing, Chelsea 7.3 percent, and Spurs 3.3 percent.

Newcastle, despite matching Barcelona, must play away in the second leg. According to Opta, their chances remain relatively better, at 32.3 percent. It can be observed that the predicted scores for the six English clubs are now lower compared to before the first match.
Former England international Stephen Warnock agrees with Opta's prediction. "I think the chances are in Liverpool and Arsenal's hands, much more than anyone else's," Warnock told BBC Sport.
"The match against Newcastle can be considered still balanced, while the goal deficit is too large for other teams that lost, as we can see that the teams they faced will score again. Chelsea's defense made many mistakes. City is vulnerable at the back. Spurs are truly chaotic," added Warnock.
The question that arises then is why English Premier League clubs struggle in the round of 16 of the Champions League? It is indeed difficult to draw conclusions from just one match. However, this at least shows that English clubs should not underestimate other European clubs, even those that do not come from the top five leagues.
Many theories have emerged, such as physical and mental fatigue due to the high-intensity pace of the Premier League, compounded by the lack of a break during the winter. There are also claims regarding squad limitations, as the large number of matches requires a deep and high-quality squad, which not all English teams possess, not to mention issues related to injuries and suspensions.

The English teams also faced relatively tough opponents, particularly City, Chelsea, Spurs, and Newcastle. Another reason is that the good performance in the league phase has forced the English clubs to play away in the first leg, which is usually considered an advantage since the second leg, which serves as the decisive match, will be played at home. Unfortunately, the away performance of these English clubs has proven to be far from the standard, making it difficult for them to turn the situation around in the second leg.
For reasons unknown, the performance of English Premier League clubs should not be so poor if we consider their claims of being the best league in the world. Ultimately, European competition demands something more: intelligence and tactical flexibility, as well as composure when facing pressure on the biggest stage.
