If Man United had a better defense, they would have the opportunity to compete for the English Premier League title alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

Manchester United has scored 30 goals after playing 16 matches in the English Premier League this season. The offensive record of the "Red Devils" is on par with the league leaders, Arsenal, and only slightly inferior to Manchester City, which occupies the second position. However, a shaky defense has thwarted MU's ambitions to break into the top four.
The match against Bournemouth on Tuesday (16/12/2025 WIB) is an opportunity for MU to approach the top four. Collecting three points will help Ruben Amorim's team match the points total of Chelsea, who currently occupy the fourth position.
MU had the chance to be just a goal difference away from that prestigious spot. However, that ambition was only partially realized.
Bruno Fernandes and his teammates have given their all to win. They scored four goals. This marks the second time this season that Manchester United has managed to score four goals. Previously, they triumphed over Brighton & Hove Albion with a score of 4-2 in the ninth week, on October 25.
The quartet of MU players took turns creating a roar in the stands of Old Trafford. Amad Diallo opened the scoring with a header in front of the goal in the 13th minute. This was Diallo's "farewell" goal before representing Ivory Coast in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Subsequently, three players whose native language is Portuguese, namely Casemiro (45+4’), Bruno Fernandes (77’), and Matheus Cunha (79’), took turns defeating Bournemouth's goalkeeper, Djordje Petrovic.
Referring to the quality of MU's attack which resulted in 3.4 expected goals (xG) from 25 shots, the number of goals against "The Cherries", the nickname of the visiting team, was in line with expectations.
However, three points that were within reach disappeared after three leads due to the defensive performance issues of the Red Devils. MU conceded four goals, despite Bournemouth only generating 1.94 xG from 14 shots.
Bournemouth indeed created fewer shots and recorded lower ball possession (43 percent), but they had an effectiveness that eliminated Manchester United's chances of improving their ranking. Bournemouth generated six significant opportunities.
In addition to the four goals scored by Antoine Semenyo (40’), Evanilson (46’), Marcus Tavernier (52’), and Eli Junior Kroupi (84’), The Cherries had two opportunities during the additional time of the second half.
David Brooks, the substitute forward for Bournemouth, had two opportunities to secure his team's victory in the 90+6 and 90+10 minutes, but MU's goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, was able to make outstanding saves.

Nevertheless, Bournemouth asserts that Old Trafford is no longer a daunting place for them. The Cherries have consistently managed to score at least three goals against the home team in three consecutive visits.
MU manager Ruben Amorim stated that the eight-goal parade that took place at Old Trafford was an entertaining duel for anyone watching. On the other hand, he observed that the performance of his players remains inconsistent.
"We had a good first half. And then it happened again, six minutes into the second half, we lost concentration and they scored two goals," Amorim told Sky Sports.
"After that, we were able to return to the match to score two more goals. We should have been calmer and closed the game better to achieve victory," added Amorim, the coach from Portugal.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth Manager Andoni Iraola mentioned that there are both positive and negative aspects to his team's performance at Old Trafford. He praised the mental attitude and attacking effectiveness of his players, but Iraola believes that his team is still too weak to anticipate the opponents' opportunities.
"We are two teams that play aggressively, openly, and perhaps today both teams played more offensively than defensively. I think we allowed the second goal, which was very easy from a corner kick. That is very painful because we were having momentum," said Iraola as reported by the BBC.

Once again discussing MU. In terms of attacking quality, MU is one of the teams with the best offensive performance in the Premier League this season. They can even compete with Arsenal and City, who are leading the title race.
This can be seen from the record of big chances and shots on target. MU is the team with the most recorded big chances, totaling 46. They are only surpassed by City and Arsenal, who have created 51 and 47 big chances, respectively.
For shots on target, MU is currently the English Premier League team with the highest number of accurate shots. On average, they produce 5.7 shots on target per game. This record is better than City (5.4 per game) and Arsenal (5.1 per game).
As a result, MU is in the second team with the highest xG collection. In the 16 matches that have taken place, the Red Devils have accumulated 30.8 xG. This figure is only slightly behind City, which has the highest xG at 30.9. Arsenal has produced 27.3 xG.
Although still being the second team with the most goals thanks to 30 goals, MU should have been able to produce a higher goal tally when referring to xG. For comparison, City scored 7.1 goals more than their xG, while Arsenal recorded 2.7 goals exceeding their xG.
On the defensive side, MU remains disorganized. This is what has prevented them from breaking into the top ranks. The sixth position still stands as their highest achievement in the English League for the 2025-2026 season. They reached that position in the ninth, fifteenth, and sixteenth weeks.
Manchester United's defense ranks among the nine worst teams in terms of expected goals against (xGA), which measures the number of potential goals conceded. In fact, the figure is even worse in terms of actual goals conceded.
MU has amassed 22 xGA, ranking 11th in the league.

In terms of actual goals conceded with 26, MU is the team with the 16th strongest defense in the Premier League.
The quantity of goals conceded by the Red Devils is similar to that of four teams favored to compete in the relegation battle, namely Leeds United, West Ham United, Burnley, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The goals that have found their way into MU's net are comparable to those of Fulham, which is currently in 14th place.
The performance of the defense could potentially worsen as it approaches the end of December and the beginning of next year. The Red Devils are set to face Aston Villa and Newcastle United in their next two matches in the English League. They will then close January 2026 by facing City and Arsenal.
During that period, Manchester United's defense will also remain lopsided. Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt are not expected to be included in the squad until after Boxing Day. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui and Diallo will represent their country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
"There are detailed aspects that we need to improve to understand the momentum of the match and we must be more clinical," said Amorim regarding the improvements that his squad needs to make.
