Jannik Sinner had some doubts about becoming the world number one tennis player by the end of 2025. However, that opportunity has opened up with the situation occurring at the Paris Masters tournament.

PARIS, WEDNESDAY — As the 2025 competition season comes to a close, a rivalry between two male singles tennis players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, will unfold as they compete for the title of the world's number one player at the end of the year. Initially, Sinner was pessimistic about his chances of surpassing Alcaraz, but the situation has changed as the ATP Masters 1000 Paris tournament progresses.
Currently, based on the latest ranking released by ATP on October 27, Sinner is positioned below Alcaraz with a difference of 840 points. Before the Paris Masters commenced on October 27, Sinner expressed doubts about his ability to rise to the top of the world rankings, replacing Alcaraz, and then maintaining that position until the end of the year.
In professional tennis, being the number one player in the world at the end of the year is a prestigious status as it reflects their performance consistency over the year. The player occupying this position receives a special trophy from the ATP (for male players) and WTA (for female players).
Alcaraz and Sinner have held that position, respectively, in 2022 and 2024. Alcaraz occupied it when Sinner's performance was not as solid as in the last two years. In 2024, Sinner was unstoppable, winning eight titles out of nine finals, which is the highest number compared to other players. He also became the player with the highest prize money.
The 2025 season is a different season as the performances of Sinner and Alcaraz are more balanced. Alcaraz leads with eight championship titles, but his ranking points are not significantly different from Sinner's.

A difference of 840 points before the Paris Masters began has changed to 650 in the live ranking calculations. This is because Alcaraz was eliminated in the second round after losing to Cameron Norrie, while Sinner won his match. Sinner defeated Zizou Bergs with a score of 6-4, 6-3, on Wednesday (29/10/2025) evening local time, and will face Francisco Cerundolo in the third round on Thursday.
Sinner's victory and Alcaraz's elimination, mathematically, widen Sinner's chances of becoming the world number one by the end of the year, as he did in 2024. Prior to these two moments occurring on different days, mathematically, Sinner needed to win the Paris Masters to return to the top of the rankings while simultaneously, Alcaraz had to fail to reach the semifinals.
Sinner also stated that he is not focusing on the ranking considering that his chances are quite slim. The Italian tennis player, who has four Grand Slam titles, aims to reach the top of the year-end rankings by 2026.
Although the opportunity is now more open, Sinner will still focus his attention on the matches. Moreover, he has never won the Paris Masters, which is part of the nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
Sinner is satisfied with his first performance at the Paris Masters, which takes place on indoor hard courts. "Usually, I have a bit of difficulty starting my performance here, but today, my movement was quite good, and my serve was accurate. This gives me confidence for the next challenge," said Sinner.

The mindset of not focusing on rankings is not excessive because the 24-year-old tennis player has another task following the Paris Masters. He has the responsibility of defending 1,500 points, the result of winning the ATP Finals 2024 tournament.
This year, Sinner, Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, and Taylor Fritz are confirmed to qualify for the ATP Finals, which will take place in Turin, Italy, from November 9 to 16. Meanwhile, three other tickets to compete in Turin will be contested by other contenders in the upcoming two weeks.
Among the four tennis players competing closely for the remaining three spots to Turin, Lorenzo Musetti's journey will become increasingly difficult after being eliminated in the second round. He lost to fellow Italian player Lorenzo Sonego, with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 1-6.
Three other tennis players who advanced to the third round are Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur, and Felix Auger Aliassime. Another player who also qualified for the third round is Zverev, who holds the title of defending champion.
The third-seeded tennis player began his appearance in a tight match against Camilo Ugo Carabelli and had to play for two hours and 35 minutes to win 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5. (AFP)
