Requesting many representatives in the top eight positions of the league phase, English teams are indeed not exempt from the scenario of facing tough opponents in the round of 16 of the Champions League.

LIVERPOOL, THURSDAY — Arne Slot's thoughts in September 2025 become relevant in explaining the fate experienced by the English representatives. Even though they successfully secured five out of the eight top teams in the league phase, the English representatives still face the potential of encountering tough opponents in the knockout stage. This situation arises due to the new format of the Champions League designed to provide surprises from the league phase to the final.
The Liverpool manager lamented his team's fate of having to face a tough opponent in the round of 16 despite successfully topping the final standings of the league phase. In last season's edition, a premature ideal final occurred when Liverpool faced Paris Saint-Germain. Ultimately, Liverpool was eliminated, and PSG emerged as the champion at the end of the season.
As the top-placed team in the league, Slot believed Liverpool would have the advantage of facing a less demanding opponent in the knockout stage. However, the new Champions League format has prevented several giants like PSG, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich from automatically qualifying through the top eight. PSG, meanwhile, qualified for the knockout stage after overcoming Brest in the round of 16 playoff round, earning them a draw against Liverpool.
"If in tennis you are the number 1 seed, it is better to face the number 24 seed than the number 12 seed, but that is the ranking based on the year. Now we are in a new format where some teams are positioned high in the league standings because they received a favorable draw, and some teams are positioned low because they received a very difficult draw. It is far from reality to say that being the number one or two seed is an advantage. You might be lucky, you might also be very unlucky," Slot stated at that time.

Slot's statement emphasizes that there is no guarantee for the teams that finish at the top during the league phase to advance through the knockout stage easily. This thought is relevant when considering the final standings of this season's Champions League league phase.
Five English teams—Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, City, and Chelsea—avoided the playoffs thanks to top-eight finishes. Only Newcastle United failed to follow in those five teams' footsteps and qualify automatically without the playoffs.
A top-placed finish doesn't guarantee the English representatives an easy knockout match. City, for example, still has the potential to face either Inter Milan or Real Madrid. In the knockout stage, City are tied with Real Madrid, Inter, Benfica, and Bodo/Glimt. One of the four teams in the playoffs is already a confirmed opponent for City in the knockout stage.
"It's been a roller coaster for all the teams. For all the other teams fighting to qualify for the last eight, it's been a really nerve-wracking ride. Look at Bodo/Glimt 10 days ago, what happened. Then what happened today with Real Madrid not being able to win (against Benfica). The Champions League isn't like it was a few years ago. It's really, really difficult," said City manager Pep Guardiola after leading his team to a 2-0 victory over Galatasaray in their final league match at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Thursday (January 29, 2026) early morning WIB.
The new format indeed brings a sort of iron law of uncertainty to the Champions League. With a system where each team faces seven different opponents and is consolidated into one large standings table, the competition has become extremely tight from the outset.

There's no guarantee that a top-tier team will easily finish in the top eight. As a result, this season, several giants like Juventus, Atletico Madrid, PSG, and Newcastle will also have to battle it out in the playoffs to secure a spot in the round of 16. As Slot previously stated, with these giants in the playoffs, the possibility of the top eight facing tough opponents will always exist.
Liverpool is no exception. Finishing in third place after a 6-0 victory over Qarabag, Liverpool has the potential to face Juventus, Atletico, Club Brugge, or Galatasaray in the knockout stage. On paper, Atletico and Juventus have a greater chance of being Liverpool's next opponents. Similarly, Spurs, who finished in the same position as Liverpool, have struggled to secure fourth place.
"There are no easy matches. So we are here with 17 points, finishing in fourth place in the group stage," said Spurs Manager Thomas Frank.
Chelsea face a tougher fate, having secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Napoli in their final league match. Despite climbing from eighth to sixth place, Chelsea will likely face either AS Monaco, Qarabag, PSG, or Newcastle in the knockout stages. Player-wise, Newcastle and PSG are the favorites to advance to the playoffs and become Chelsea's next opponents.
Only Arsenal is likely to face a relatively light opponent. In Arsenal's case, Slot's statement has not been proven. Finishing at the top of the standings eases Arsenal's path, which will likely face either Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Olympiakos, or Borussia Dortmund.
Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres is confident that his team will be able to smoothly advance through the round of 16. In the final match of the league phase, Arsenal defeated Kairat Almaty 3-2.
"We finished in first place, as we wanted. So this was a good group stage for us. Now we look forward to the knockout phase," said Gyokeres. (REUTERS)
