Spurs deserved to win but were hampered by the brilliance of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos. The draw leaves Ange Postecoglou in a deep hole of uncertainty

LONDON, FRIDAY – Lady Luck has ceased to smile upon Tottenham Hotspur. Even with an impressive performance, victory still eludes "The Lily Whites." Spurs' dominance only led them to a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals. Extra effort will be required to secure a win in the second leg at Frankfurt's home ground.
The analogy of Goddess Fortuna was used by Spurs Manager, Ange Postecoglou, to describe what happened to his team. Spurs played tenaciously with a series of opportunities but ultimately failed to secure a victory. After inconsistent performances in their last five matches, Spurs managed to showcase an attacking style of football that was quite entertaining.
"I resign myself to the reality that the football gods have turned their gaze elsewhere this year. They are clearly preoccupied with other clubs and managers. So whatever we achieve, we must do it without them this year," said Postecoglou after the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, England, early Friday morning (11/4/2025).
To secure victory, Spurs applied pressure from the start of the match. They implemented a high defensive line and confined Frankfurt's players to their defensive area. However, a single mistake made by James Maddison while building an attack from the back turned into a disaster for Spurs.

Maddison failed to protect the ball, allowing it to be seized by the opponent. Hugo Ekitike, who received the ball, immediately charged into Spurs' defense. With a few touches, Ekitike then unleashed a powerful low shot that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario could not block. The early goal in the sixth minute delivered a harsh blow to the Spurs players, who had intended to start strong from the beginning.
"I just took the ball and was confident I could score from that position. I think it was a good goal, but I hope I can contribute more to the team, even though it felt great," said Ekitike.
Spurs increasingly intensified their attacks after falling behind. As a result, Pedro Porro equalized in the 26th minute with a heel flick. Spurs' wave of attacks did not stop, and even grew stronger. Spurs' dominance was evident from the numerous touches they created in Frankfurt's defensive area. Spurs recorded 262 passes, while Frankfurt managed only 135 passes.
The hard work of the Spurs players resulted in several golden opportunities such as those created by Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur. Unfortunately, both of their efforts were still blocked by the crossbar. Throughout the match, Spurs fired six shots on target, but only one was converted into a goal. Meanwhile, Frankfurt, who mostly withstood the onslaught, appeared more efficient by only recording two shots on target but one of them resulted in a goal.

Creating a series of chances but failing to add to the scoreline left Spurs' attacking line of Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke frustrated. Lady Luck had indeed turned away from Spurs. On the other hand, Frankfurt had their own "Lady Luck" in the form of goalkeeper Kaua Santos.
The Brazilian goalkeeper was brilliant, making five brilliant saves. The most crucial one was a header from Micky Van De Ven. Van De Ven's header almost made Spurs fans jump for joy. However, Santos was quick to thwart it.
"We played well, especially in the second half when we had a lot of chances to score. It was a tough game, but we still have everything to play for next week," Bergvall said.

The 1-1 draw further plunged Postecoglou into uncertainty. Postecoglou's position is currently under great pressure following Spurs' inconsistent performances. "The White Lily" is currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League standings. Even winning the Europa League alone is considered insufficient to restore Spurs supporters' trust in Postecoglou.
"The second leg will be tough, maybe even going to extra time, we need all the players ready to play. The good thing is that most of them are back and healthy, that's the important thing," Postecoglou said. (REUTERS)
