Tottenham continues to be a nightmare for the host Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Unlike last season, Tottenham won thanks to an exceptional defense.

MANCHESTER, SATURDAY — When not in possession of the ball, almost no team can make Manchester City uncomfortable on either side of the field. Tottenham Hotspur was the exception. They successfully made City suffer with a defensive clinic under coach Thomas Frank.
Tottenham succeeded in disrupting City's first home match at the Etihad Stadium this season, Saturday (23/8/2025). Arriving as the "dark horse" team, they returned home with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from winger Brennan Johnson and midfielder Joao Palhinha in the first half.
"I am very satisfied. We played very well today. To be able to score goals and return home with a clean sheet from here is a perfect result. I have been here many times and have experienced conceding many goals. It is not easy to defend against City," said Johnson.
"The White Lily," as the visiting team is nicknamed, arrived with the pragmatic principle that "defense is the key to victory." They were reluctant to allow City players to move freely. Interestingly, Tottenham did not always play passively by defending very deep or "parking the bus."
Frank came up with the idea of combining a super-high and low block defense. As City built from deep, six or seven Tottenham players would press in a man-to-man fashion. This approach was extremely risky if even the slightest mistake were made, but it persisted throughout the match.
The idea was executed thoroughly. Tottenham center-back Micky van de Ven left his position several times. He often followed opposing midfielder Rayan Cherki, who dropped back to pick up the ball to keep the man-to-man formation going. The other defenders worked together to close the gap.
When City was able to break through that high trap, Tottenham quickly changed their scheme to a low block. Frank's team immediately filled the area inside and around the penalty box. They were always able to limit space by moving as a very compact unit.
The patience of the Tottenham squad was tested. They had to be disciplined in defense until opportunities to attack presented themselves. This challenge was successfully navigated during the first half hour. City threatened several times through winger Omar Marmoush, but it was still managed effectively.
Tottenham's first chance came ten minutes before halftime. City were busy attacking and pressing high. When the opposition sent a long ball, it broke the offside trap. Striker Richarlison raced through unmarked and provided the assist for Johnson.
In first-half injury time, Frank's risky idea paid off. After repeatedly harassing Pep Guardiola's team with aggressive pressure from inside the penalty area, midfielder Pape Sarr managed to steal a pass from goalkeeper James Trafford. That moment led to Palhinha's goal.
Tottenham indeed still lagged significantly in ball possession, with only 39.1 percent. However, they were able to control the match without holding the ball. They did this by limiting the movements of the City players into dangerous areas. It was evident that the number of shots taken by the visiting team was greater than that of City, with a count of 12 to 10.
City's creative midfielders, such as Tijjani Reijnders and Cherki, were left frustrated by Frank's defensive clinic. After shining in the first week, the two players combined for only one shot and one key pass at the Etihad. Forward Erling Haaland also did not receive enough support.
Palhinha is one of the reasons for the absence of Reijnders and Cherki. The loaned player from Bayern Munich has performed very solidly in midfield. In addition to recording the highest number of tackles, four times, he has also consistently been able to close gaps that could potentially be exploited by opponents.
Richarlison also deserves appreciation. In addition to contributing one assist, the Brazilian national team player also led Tottenham's front line to apply high pressure. He utilized his running speed to create panic among the opposing players who were in possession of the ball.
City defender Ruben Dias said he was unlucky to concede the first goal. The offside trap should have been more precise. "Spurs are a team that can be very dangerous. We started well, but didn't react as well as we should have, especially after conceding," he said.
Tottenham was able to conquer City for the second consecutive time at the Etihad. Last season, in November 2024, they won decisively 4-0 while still being coached by Ange Postecoglou. This victory was largely achieved due to City being trapped in poor performance, especially in the first half.
The result also serves as a significant evaluation for Guardiola, who is striving to elevate City to its best level. They continue to display many weaknesses in the new season, one of which is the lack of a cohesive attacking pattern. They are merely relying on individual abilities. (AP/REUTERS)
