The mediocre performances of Italian League teams in the Champions League do not symbolize a decline in the quality of Italian football. Italian players who have careers abroad are performing well.

An anomaly is currently occurring in Italian football. Representatives of Serie A are being eliminated one by one in the Champions League. On the other hand, Italian players who are pursuing their careers abroad have become the main backbone of their teams to continue advancing in the elite club competition in Europe.
Inter Milan, the current league leaders and leading contenders for the Serie A Scudetto, have been eliminated from the Champions League. The Nerazzurri have fallen twice to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. Surprisingly, Inter lost 5-2 on aggregate.
Napoli had also previously ended their Champions League campaign. As the defending Italian league champions, Napoli were eliminated in the group stage. Antonio Conte's side's performance was insufficient to secure a place in the top 24 and advance to the playoffs.
Italy also has the opportunity to record a dark history in the modern era of the Champions League. For the first time, there are no Italian representatives in the round of 16.
In a special column in La Gazzetta dello Sport, Arrigo Sacchi mentioned three factors that made him confident Inter could overturn a 1-3 aggregate deficit in the second leg at the San Siro Stadium on Wednesday (25/2/2026) WIB. That hope ended in vain after Inter lost 1-2 to Bodo/Glimt in front of their home fans.

"First, Inter had technical superiority over their opponents. Second, (Cristian) Chivu's squad was in good form domestically. Third, there was pressure from the fans at San Siro. In reality, Bodo/Glimt eliminated Inter, which, from Inter's perspective, was a huge disappointment," wrote Sacchi, the Italy national team coach at the 1994 World Cup, in Wednesday's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Fabio Capello, the former coach of Italy, highlighted the playing approach presented by Federico Dimarco and his teammates at San Siro. According to Capello, Inter's performance seemed as if they did not want to pursue victory, as they played very slowly, without speed, and lacked individual player actions to overcome opponents in one-on-one situations.
"Inter didn't play at the tempo needed to beat a cautious team like Bodo/Glimt. There was a bit of a change with the arrival of Petar Sucic, but he came on too late," Capello said, as reported by Corriere dello Sport.
In reviewing the statistics of the second match against Bodo/Glimt, Inter appeared to have exerted every effort to achieve victory. They controlled the ball for 71 percent of the time and created 30 shots.
However, Inter minimally created significant opportunities and had low effectiveness in capitalizing on chances. Inter recorded only 23 percent shooting accuracy. This figure is significantly lower compared to the 71 percent shooting accuracy achieved by Bodo/Glimt. Additionally, the quantity of significant opportunities for Inter was inferior compared to the visiting team from Norway (two compared to three).

"Unfortunately, we were not able to be competitive in the Champions League. We started the competition well and won four consecutive matches, then we lost points despite playing well," said Inter Coach Cristian Chivu reflecting on his debut handling Inter in the Champions League.
"This competition demands a high level. If we fail to seize opportunities and make the right decisions, the team will be penalized for the first mistake. We must think ahead," added Chivu, who is from Romania.
Outside of Italy, diaspora players who have ventured to other countries have delivered significant individual performances for their teams to advance to the round of 16. Sandro Tonali, for instance, scored the first goal for Newcastle United against Qarabag at St James' Park, England. The match was won by "The Magpies" with a score of 3-2, allowing the English representative to lead with an aggregate score of 9-3.
The performance of Tonali, the midfielder of the Italian national team, was met with the title of Player of the Match from UEFA. The UEFA Technical Observer Group stated that Tonali was able to maintain ball possession, control the game from the midfield, deliver important passes, provide great energy for the team, and score the crucial first goal.
The goal scored by Tonali in the fourth minute was the only shot he took. It was also Tonali's first goal in the Champions League this season. He recorded a 93 percent passing accuracy and created three key passes.
"We had a great start, scoring two goals in the first six minutes. After that, the game opened up a bit and became more difficult. The most important thing was to win the game and progress to the next round," Tonali, who is entering his third season in England, told UEFA TV.
Another impressive Italian import player is Matteo Ruggeri, the left wing-back of Atletico Madrid. Ruggeri provided a precise assist for the fourth goal of Atletico, securing his team's 4-1 victory over Club Brugge at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, Spain.
Ruggeri's assist helped Atletico striker Alexander Sorloth score a hat trick. Los Rojiblancos advanced 7-4 on aggregate. In nine Champions League matches this season, Ruggeri has provided two assists.
Regardless of that assist, Ruggeri was the player with the most chances created in the match. He generated five opportunities for his teammates. This demonstrates Ruggeri's significant role for the team coached by Diego Simeone in his debut season playing in the Spanish capital.
Amid the mediocre performances of Italian teams in the Champions League this season, Italy's development products have proven to still be among the best in Europe. They are capable of making a tangible contribution at the highest level.
