Ethan Nwaneri is no longer an academy teenager who will be showered with praise for a single outstanding performance. His standards will be higher next season, following a new contract.

LONDON, FRIDAY — The five-year contract extension demonstrates Arsenal's great confidence in 18-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri. This trust comes with a significant challenge for the teenager, who will contest Martin Odegaard's position in the upcoming season.
Nwaneri has signed a long-term contract extension until the summer of 2030 on Friday (8/8/2025) evening WIB. He follows in the footsteps of his teammate and fellow Arsenal academy graduate, Myles Lewis-Skelly, who signed a new contract at the end of June.
"This means a lot to me, I am very happy that everything is settled. Here is where I feel at home and will develop my best abilities. I am ready. This will actually be my first season, being part of the main squad and the locker room," said Nwaneri.
The England U-21 national team player turned 18 years old on March 21. This means he has only had the opportunity to share the locker room with senior Arsenal players for the last two months of the previous season. The English Premier League regulations require players under 18 to prepare in a separate room.
For Nwaneri, the differences in the upcoming season will not only stem from the situation in the locker room. He will also receive a more significant and clearer role. Last season, the player indeed appeared 37 times across all competitions. However, this was due to the long-term injuries of Odegaard and Bukayo Saka.
Nwaneri does not have a clear position. He played as an attacking midfielder when Odegaard was injured and switched to playing as a right winger when Saka was absent. However, after Odegaard and Saka were able to play together, Nwaneri only appeared for 116 minutes in the last six matches.

I must adapt to the demands of the English League. Therefore, I believe I need to change physically. In addition, mentality is equally important, especially in coming to terms with injuries.
The plan for Nwaneri is reflected in the preseason tour. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has consistently played him in the attacking midfielder position, alternating with Odegaard. The left-footed player has even been trusted to start in three out of four preseason matches so far.
Interestingly, Nwaneri has emerged as one of the most positively performing players in a series of friendly matches. He has created numerous opportunities with his individual dribbling actions and long-range shots. His style is different from Odegaard, who is more patient in orchestrating attacks.
Arteta always prioritizes collective play. However, he sometimes needs players like Nwaneri who can break the deadlock with individual actions. "The most surprising thing about him is his confidence and decision-making. He is willing to take risks," said Arteta in February 2025.
Nwaneri scored nine goals in all competitions last season, surpassing Odegaard (6 goals), who played almost three times as many minutes. Nwaneri scored all of those goals with just 1.9 expected goals (xG).
To play in a more central position, Nwaneri performed his duties exceptionally well during the off-season. He returned from vacation with a noticeably more muscular physique. This increase in muscle mass is crucial for competing in midfield, which typically involves more physical duels.
"I have to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. So I think I need to change physically. In addition, mentality is equally important, especially in coming to terms with injuries. I feel better," said the youngest debutant in the history of the Premier League (15 years and 181 days).

Certainly, as a young player, Nwaneri is still far from perfect. He displays several weaknesses that need to be addressed promptly. Decision-making is a primary focus. Nwaneri often dribbles or shoots when other players are open on the other side.
Nwaneri is indeed tasked with being more straightforward when receiving the ball. However, if he wishes to replace Odegaard's role as the playmaker, he must understand the game better. His movements will be easily read if he only focuses on relying on individual actions.
Another homework assignment for Nwaneri is to maintain his contribution. His positioning without ball control was exposed during the preseason match against Villarreal last Wednesday. He merely watched as the opposing players moved in the midfield. That moment resulted in a goal for the opposing team.
In contrast to Odegaard. One of the special qualities of the Arsenal captain is his relentless pressing of opposing players after losing the ball. Odegaard never stops running to close down empty spaces, especially when the team is implementing a high block defense. (AP/REUTERS)
