LONDON, SUNDAY – Not only was there a flurry of goals, but the match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur was also marked by a storm of injuries and red cards. The obligation for both teams to win triggered a chaotic yet highly entertaining match. Liverpool led 2-1 but had to pay the price with player injuries.
Chaos is the most appropriate word to describe the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, on Sunday (21/12/2025) early morning WIB. In addition to player injuries, referee John Brooks issued up to eight cards, including two red cards, for Spurs. The match between Liverpool and Spurs is always remembered for its goal productivity. Matches between the two teams rarely end without goals. This is the match with the highest total number of goals in the history of the English Premier League (209 goals).
This time the story is somewhat different. In addition to maintaining goal productivity, the match was more interesting and tense, culminating in injuries to forwards Alexander Isak and Conor Bradley from Liverpool, as well as two red cards for Spurs. The series of chaotic events at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was none other than triggered by the pressure to win for both teams.
Spurs, in need of a positive result after securing only two victories in their last nine matches in the Premier League, sought to control the flow of the game from the outset. The "White Lily" appeared more dominant over Liverpool, who seemed less enthusiastic in building their attacks during the first half. The Liverpool players were too slow to capitalize on attacking momentum. Even when opportunities to attack arose, Liverpool's sharpness vanished upon entering the Spurs' penalty area.
The storm of chaos began with the red card received by Spurs midfielder, Xavi Simons. The Dutch national player was charged with a serious foul against Virgil Van Dijk from behind. Brooks initially issued a yellow card to Simons. However, after the foul was reviewed, Simons' punishment was changed to a red card.

The loss of Simons forced forward Randal Kolo Muani to take a deeper position. This was due to Spurs Manager Thomas Frank insisting on maintaining the same system. Muani played a dual role, acting not only as a striker but also as an attacking midfielder bridging the midfield and the front line. In this situation, Spurs' formation changed from 4-4-2 to 4-4-1.
Playing with 10 men also affected Spurs' attacking intensity. From initially being predominantly pressing, Spurs then played more direct, using quick passes forward.
The momentum of Spurs' imbalance was attempted to be utilized by Liverpool Manager Arne Slot in the second half. He strengthened the attacking line by introducing striker Alexander Isak, replacing Conor Bradley who felt discomfort after a collision with Djed Spence. Isak was able to break the deadlock just 10 minutes after being on the field.
The quick short pass combination between Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz disrupted the Spurs' defense. Isak scored from close range but collided with Micky van de Ven, preventing him from celebrating the goal. Ultimately, Isak had to be substituted by Jeremie Frimpong due to injury.

The hidden blessing from Isak's injury was Liverpool's second goal scored by Ekitike. The entry of Frimpong, who was bolder in penetrating movements into Spurs' defensive area, resulted in Ekitike's header goal. The second goal of Liverpool faced protests from Spurs as Ekitike was deemed to have fouled Christian Romero first in the aerial duel. However, the referee remained steadfast in his decision.
"I think the second goal was a mistake by the referee. I believe there were two hands (Ekitike) on the back (of Romero). Clearly, two hands on the back. I do not understand how you can do that (and escape the referee's observation)," said Frank.
The equalizing goal by Spurs, scored by substitute striker Richarlison, intensified the storm. With that goal, Spurs' hopes of leveling the score increased. Consequently, Liverpool had no choice but to shift their focus to defense due to a series of attacks from Spurs.
To be honest, I thought against nine players, we probably could have prevented them from scoring.
Amid the threat of Spurs equalizing, the momentum was disrupted by Romero's red card. The Spurs captain lost his temper and kicked Ibrahima Konate after both had fallen. Brooks issued a second yellow card to Romero, forcing Spurs to struggle until the end with only nine players.
Not only Romero, the chaos of the match also forced Brooks to issue yellow cards to Rodrigo Bentancur, Alexis Mac Allister, and Richarlison during the added time of the second half. Collisions between players became increasingly frequent. Frimpong, who came on as a substitute, was also unable to continue the match due to injury.

The loss of two players weakened the Spurs' attack, which ultimately could not score an equalizing goal again. "To be honest, I thought that against nine players, we might be able to prevent them from scoring. But it seemed like we were playing with nine players and they with 11 players, because the attacks kept coming, which did not result in a goal," said Slot.
This victory extends Liverpool's positive trend, as they remain unbeaten in six consecutive matches. Meanwhile, Frank is increasingly under pressure, having secured only one victory in the last eight matches for Spurs.
Surviving the storm at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is commensurate with the result received by Liverpool. The additional three points elevate Liverpool to fifth place. Defending the championship title may be very challenging for "The Reds," but the effort to compete in European club competitions next season remains intact. (BBC)
