CHIANG MAI, MONDAY – A momentary lapse shattered the struggle of Indonesia U-22 in their first match of the 2025 SEA Games against the Philippines. The "Garuda Muda" succumbed 0-1 at the 700th Year Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Monday (8/12/2025). The Philippines demonstrated that dominating the course of the match does not automatically guarantee a team victory.
"I am very pleased with the character shown by our team. I feel that the attitude and mentality among the players is something that sets them apart. Without that attitude and mentality, the result today might have been different," said the Philippines coach, Garrath McPherson, after the match.
With this result, the Philippines is confirmed to advance to the semifinals after sweeping two group stage matches with victories. The Philippines topped Group C with a total of six points, while Myanmar and Indonesia have yet to earn any points.
Despite the defeat, Indonesia still has a chance to advance from the group stage through the route of the best second-placed teams. However, Indonesia must be able to win by a significant goal margin in the second match against Myanmar.
Honestly, we played not as expected. It is very unfortunate that at the end of the first half, there was a throw-in by the Philippines that led to our conceding a goal.
The winning goal for the Philippines was scored by striker Otu Bisong Banatao at the end of the first half. Banatao took advantage of his towering physical stature to win an aerial duel against Donny Tri Pamungkas. Banatao's goal stemmed from the negligence of the "Garuda Muda" players in anticipating the throw-in from the Philippines.

"Honestly, we played not as expected. It is very unfortunate that at the end of the first half there was a throw-in to the Philippines that caused us to concede a goal. It is truly regrettable that the throw-in did not align with what we practiced, who was supposed to mark whom," said Indra.
Indonesia dominated the course of the match but lost creativity every time they entered the final third of the Philippine defense. This was due to the Philippine backline, commanded by Noah Leddel and Jaime Rosquillo, which was very disciplined in maintaining their defensive area. In addition, the Philippines were able to read every direction of the "Garuda Muda" attacks.
All of this is thanks to McPherson, who has a background as a video analyst. He observed and analyzed Indonesia's playing style, particularly when facing India and Mali. McPherson instructed his players not to allow Mauro Zijlstra to have too much time on the ball.
As a result, Indonesia's attacking route was blocked. Rayhan Hanan, who was appointed as an attacking midfielder, was rendered ineffective due to tight marking from the Philippine players. Efforts to score then relied on long-range shots. Defender Muhammad Ferrari attempted a long-range shot that was successfully thwarted by Philippine goalkeeper Nicholas Guimaraes.

Anomalies colored Indonesia's performance in the opening match of the SEA Games. The players appeared to lack cohesion with one another. This is peculiar considering Indonesia's thorough preparations, which included four friendly matches against India and Mali. Despite such a number of trials, the players seemingly have not yet been able to understand each other's movements on the field.
However, this can also be understood considering that the four friendly matches were used as a means of player selection. The lineup of the "Garuda Muda" in those four matches frequently changed, making it nearly impossible for them to be tested in a definitive composition.
On one counterattack, Indonesia's forwards outnumbered the Philippines' two-man defense with three men. However, Zijlstra, in possession, passed the ball too hard and inaccurately to a player on the left wing. They appeared to be disconnected, and the momentum for a goal was lost.
This defeat not only diminishes Indonesia's chances of advancing to the semifinals but also tarnishes Indra Sjafri's impressive record every time he faced the Philippines. In the three previous encounters across all age groups, Indra has always managed to secure victory.
Nevertheless, it should be acknowledged that the negative result in this inaugural match is not the end for Indonesia. A ticket to the semifinals is still very much attainable. However, to achieve this, the "Garuda Muda" must improve their performance in the upcoming second match.

This is because two strong countries, Malaysia and Vietnam, are Indonesia's competitors for the runner-up spot. Malaysia and Vietnam will meet in the final match of Group B. Both currently have three points, but Malaysia has the advantage in terms of productivity, with a goal difference of three.
Therefore, Indonesia's advancement to the semifinals will also heavily depend on the match between Malaysia and Vietnam. One of them must defeat the other. A draw between the two countries will close the door for Indonesia to reach the semifinals.
Indra stated that he is not thinking about the match between Malaysia and Vietnam because what is most important for him is to achieve victory over Myanmar. Indra will prepare his players to play more offensively in order to secure three points.
