Brentford boss Thomas Frank has taken something from Arsenal's clash with Madrid to take into next weekend. Brentford have prepared a surprise for Arsenal.

LONDON, FRIDAY — At Emirates Stadium, during Arsenal's resounding victory over Real Madrid, there was a spy mingling among tens of thousands of spectators. That person was Thomas Frank, the Head Coach of Brentford. He came to prepare a surprise for Arsenal.
Frank's presence in the stands went unnoticed by the media. The coach himself revealed the story during a press conference ahead of the visit to Arsenal's home ground on Friday (11/4/2025). "I was actually at the match," he said when asked about the Champions League quarter-final game.
Frank witnessed firsthand two spectacular goals by Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice from free kicks. According to him, Rice was very clever with the first goal as he managed to exploit the vulnerability of the opponent's defensive wall. For the second goal, the coach could only offer praise because the execution was absolutely perfect.
Although impressed, Frank visited Emirates Stadium not as a supporter. The man from Denmark has no affiliation with either Arsenal or Madrid. He came because he will be the next opponent of "The Gunners" at the same stadium on Saturday (12/4/2025) at 11:30 PM WIB.
Frank took Madrid's perspective. "For the first (goal), I wish our wall had been set up a bit differently, so he (Rice) couldn't exploit the open side. The second goal was truly great; it would have been very difficult to stop. However, it would be better if you didn't concede a free kick," he said.

Arsenal displayed dominance in their 3-0 victory over Madrid last Wednesday. On paper, they should not face difficulties against Brentford, which is far inferior in terms of quality. However, Brentford's defensive approach and the need for rotation by the team managed by Mikel Arteta could have a significant impact.
Frank must have observed closely how fragile the 4-4-2 defensive structure displayed by Madrid was. The structure was too loose, with players lacking discipline in closing spaces, particularly the attacking duo Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. Their midfield was also easily bypassed.
Brentford won’t let that happen. The Bees are used to playing a low block with very tight spaces between players. They have recently been using a 4-2-3-1 formation, but can switch to a 5-4-1 when defending if there is more threat on the wings.
Arsenal's winger Bukayo Saka was one of the factors that led to Madrid's downfall. He was left free to duel with defender David Alaba. That one-on-one scheme is not in Frank's vocabulary. Brentford always try to outnumber the wingers with zonal defense.

It has been proven, Brentford's tough defense always makes it difficult for Arsenal. Saka and his colleagues were indeed able to win four of the last five meetings. However, three of them ended with only a one-goal advantage. That thin margin is what makes Frank optimistic.
"You can see Arsenal are great when they are at the highest level. They did it against Madrid. But we are confident with the achievements of the last two seasons (at the Emirates Stadium). We only lost 1-2 last season and drew 1-1 the year before," Frank concluded.
Team rotation will play a major role in the upcoming match. Arsenal will return to Madrid for the second leg next Thursday. Several key players received treatment and had to be withdrawn in the middle of last week, including Rice and Saka.
The situation is less than ideal for the Gunners. With five first-team players out injured, they struggle to maintain their quality of play when they rotate. This was evident last weekend, when Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by 15th-placed Everton after taking an early lead.
The center-back position is the most difficult to rotate. After Gabriel Magalhaes' injury, they are almost limited to Jakub Kiwior and William Saliba. Full-back Ben White can play there, but he is needed as cover for Jurrien Timber.
For Arteta, the temptation to field the best squad is very big. Although the chances of winning are very slim, Arsenal managed to close the gap by one point from the leaders Liverpool who lost last week. They hope to take full points and wait for Liverpool to slip again.
Arteta said Rice and Saka were fine. They were withdrawn only as a precaution. Both are ready to be played again this weekend. "There is a huge energy after that very special night. Now how to use that momentum and our full focus is on Brentford," he said. (AP/REUTERS)
