Rosenior's steadfastness in the idea of playing with short passes resulted in a bitter defeat against Arsenal. The new Chelsea coach still failed to secure a victory despite being aware of the opponent's strengths.

LONDON, THURSDAY — After a sweet debut, Liam Rosenior was brought back down to earth as Chelsea suffered a 2-3 defeat to Arsenal at home in the first semifinal of the English League Cup. Rosenior held on to his belief in the idea of building attacks from the back with short passes. This idea was easily countered by Arsenal with their tight defensive structure.
When defeating Charlton 5-1 in his debut match as Chelsea's coach, Rosenior appeared calm on the sidelines. He did not express much in response to the goals scored by his players. His personality changed 180 degrees when hosting Arsenal at Stamford Bridge Stadium, London, on Thursday (15/1/2026) in his second match in charge of Chelsea. No longer was there a flat expression from Rosenior. He stood with a serious demeanor, observing the game on the field. His reactions were explosive whenever a foul occurred.
Charlton is not a worthy opponent for Chelsea, so it is understandable that Rosenior is not overly affected by the atmosphere. Facing Arsenal, which is significantly stronger, is a different matter. Moreover, this is Rosenior's first match leading the team in front of Chelsea supporters. It is fitting that he aims for victory as a welcoming gift for the fans. Additionally, a win would ease Chelsea's path in the second match at Arsenal's home ground.
Before the match, Rosenior praised the collective play and organization of Arsenal as a team. He also mentioned Arsenal's strength in scoring goals from set pieces. Despite being aware of Arsenal's advantages, Rosenior was unable to do much to prevent Chelsea from conceding prematurely to a header from Ben White, who connected with a corner kick from Declan Rice. The Arsenal defender had already put his team ahead just seven minutes into the match.
The goal by White certainly came as a harsh blow to Chelsea and Rosenior. The advantages of the opponent that had been studied did not prevent Chelsea from conceding. It was Arsenal's 24th goal from set pieces this season and the 18th goal scored from a corner kick.

The operation of the White goal scheme is very neat and well-planned. In situations involving aerial duels, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Magalhaes play a role in obstructing the movement of Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. As a result, Sanchez is unable to freely clear the ball in the air. Rice sends the ball to the far post where White is already waiting without significant marking. Chelsea forward Joao Pedro should have been able to assist in monitoring the opponent's movement but merely stands on the goal line.
Through the quick execution of the set-piece goal, the Arsenal players seemed to toy with Chelsea, who also had an advantage in scoring from corner kicks. This season, Chelsea has collected nine goals from corner kicks, a number that is only surpassed by Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, both of whom have scored 11 goals.
"He (White) has shown in various contexts that he is a player who will give everything for the team, that he is always present. He is someone who can be relied upon in any situation. I believe tonight he has done what he needed to do," said Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta commenting on his team's first goal.
Rosenior employed the same formation, 4-2-3-1, as when defeating Charlton. When attacking, Marc Cucurella would advance into the midfield, leaving his position as left-back, thus changing the formation to 3-4-3. Chelsea's front line consisted of Estevao, Marc Guiu, and Pedro Neto. Estevao and Neto, who possess advantages in dribbling and speed, often serve as the driving force behind Chelsea's attacks.
Here, Rosenior continues to uphold his idea of building an attack. Chelsea plays short passes from the back to break down Arsenal's defense. This scheme was also frequently employed by Rosenior when he was still managing Strasbourg.

There are at least two possible reasons why Rosenior persists in attacking from the back instead of playing more directly. First, Rosenior is reluctant to abandon his trademark style of play. Second, Arsenal's quick transitions and solid defensive structure prevent Chelsea from getting the ball directly forward.
In such a situation, playing directly is equivalent to giving possession of the ball back to Arsenal. Therefore, Rosenior had no choice but to rely on short passing combinations to break through Arsenal's tight defense. A choice that ultimately could also be handled very well by Arsenal.
Arsenal immediately applied pressure as Chelsea players just entered the midfield area. They closed off all passing options, forcing Chelsea players to return the ball backward. This resulted in the ball circulating more in Chelsea's playing area (254 passes) compared to Arsenal's playing area (only 167 passes).
The majority of Chelsea's attacks originated from the right wing, the position occupied by Estevao. The young player from Brazil was in top form during this match. He was very confident in his dribbling ability, managing to get past the defenses of Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes.
"In the first half, I was very pleased with the involvement and commitment of the players. They gave their all. The match was open. I was disappointed to concede from a corner kick. I was also disappointed with the third goal because we had returned to the game and were dominating at that moment," said Rosenior.

The match became more interesting in the second half. A back-and-forth exchange of attacks occurred, but Arsenal was able to double their lead through Viktor Gyokeres. The goal originated from Cucurella's delay in closing down space on the left wing. He managed to catch up with Bukayo Saka, but White came in to provide support. White then delivered a cross that Sanchez failed to block. Gyokeres, with his goal-scoring instinct, quickly pounced on the loose ball and turned it into a goal.
"I knew he (Gyokeres) would be waiting for the ball on the other side. To be honest, I didn't pay much attention, I just shot the ball across," said White regarding his assist.
Rosenior reacted by introducing Benoit Badiashile and Alejandro Garnacho. The decision proved fruitful as Garnacho successfully scored from Neto's cross. Arsenal responded with a goal from Martin Zubimendi.
Seven minutes before the normal time ended, Garnacho showcased his prowess again by scoring his second goal. The success of scoring two goals after starting the match from the bench prompted Rosenior to reconsider his decision to bench Garnacho.
The 2-3 defeat at home makes Chelsea's struggle more difficult in the second meeting. This season, the "London Cannoneers" have not lost a single match when playing at home. (BBC)
