Every champion team needs a magical moment. Who would have thought that this moment would come for Arsenal through 16-year-old Max Dowman, who became the hero of the 2-0 victory over Everton.

LONDON, SATURDAY - Arsenal nearly stumbled again in the pursuit of the English Premier League title, until finally, 16-year-old player from the academy, Max Dowman, came as a savior. Dowman provided something that Arsenal lacked throughout the match, which is courage. Thanks to his impressive performance and contributions, the young prodigy is now forever recorded in history.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made one of the best decisions of his career during the match against Everton at the Emirates Stadium, London, on Sunday (15/3/2026) in the early hours. With the score still at 0-0 and Arsenal's performance stagnating in the 74th minute, the coach decided to bring on Dowman.
As a context, the match is crucial for "The Cannons" to win. They need to maintain distance from the pursuit of their closest competitor, Manchester City. Then, amidst the high stakes, the substitute chosen to enter the game is Dowman. The teenager last appeared in the league at the end of August 2025, against Liverpool, for just one minute.

What is there to fear for a child of that age? Clearly, there is nothing. Dowman demonstrated this on the field. Since entering the game, the English player revitalized Arsenal's right side through his dribbling actions. He took the initiative to deliver a cross when there was one minute left in regular time. That pass ultimately resulted in the opening goal for the home team.
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford misjudged the powerful cross. Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie deflected the ball towards striker Viktor Gyokeres, who merely had to tap it into the net. The atmosphere of anxiety at the Emirates Stadium suddenly transformed into joy. "When Max came on, you could feel there would be a (special moment)," said Gyokeres.
"He is an extraordinary player. He is able to remain calm and play without fear every time he receives the ball. He also makes the right decisions in almost every opportunity. We are all behind him. I am very pleased with his achievements," added Gyokeres, who was also substituted in the second half.
Dowman's brilliance was perfectly capped at the end of the match, with just a few seconds remaining in injury time. He scored his first league goal in his career. He took advantage of Pickford's lapse as he advanced during the corner kick. The "wonder kid" dribbled past two players simultaneously to break away alone towards the empty Everton goal.
That goal secured Dowman's name in history. He officially became the youngest player to score in the league (16 years, 73 days). The slender player broke the record previously held by former Everton player James Vaughan, which was set during a match against Crystal Palace in 2005 (16 years, 270 days).
The atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium immediately "exploded" after the goal. The Arsenal players congratulated Dowman, patting the head of the teenager who is still in school. Thanks to this victory, Arsenal was able to extend their lead over City to 10 points. Meanwhile, Declan Rice and his teammates have seven league matches left to play this season.

Arteta praised Dowman highly. "He changed our game since he came on. To do that at his age, with the pressure and expectations to win the match, is something extraordinary. However, everything feels natural for him because he has the talent to achieve many great things in the future," he stated.
Dowman succeeded in standing out by breaking Arsenal's typically safe gameplay. From the very first minute, they were always cautious in attacking Everton, who predominantly employed a low block defense. The home team was reluctant to make mistakes in their attacks that could lead to counterattacks.
In such situations, Arteta's team usually capitalizes on set pieces. However, this reliable weapon was effectively neutralized by the Everton team. As a result, "The Gunners" rotated the ball more from the left to the right, resembling a horseshoe formation. When Dowman came on, the teenager was bold enough to take risks.
Without the two magical moments from Dowman, Everton actually deserved to be ahead compared to Arsenal. "I think (David) Raya made more important saves than Jordan tonight. We could almost catch them, but Arsenal clearly showed their strength in defense. You have to commend them for that," said Everton Coach David Moyes.
Dowman's talent has been shining at the Arsenal academy since last year. This is what led Arteta to involve him in the senior team during the preseason phase. Dowman even made an appearance in the league at the beginning of the season when he was still 15 years old. The progress of the England U-19 national team player has been hindered due to a lengthy injury since the end of last year.
A new potential star has emerged at the Emirates Stadium. With the potential displayed in the recent match, he could be very beneficial for Arsenal in the remainder of the season. Arsenal is still competing for the championship title in four different competitions and requires contributions from as many players as possible. (AP/REUTERS)
