In the European Champions League recently, the second leg encounters are fraught with impossibilities. The second leg, especially in the semifinals, is believed to be more challenging than the final.

BARCELONA, THURSDAY — Arsenal and Barcelona both achieved unsatisfactory results in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals. Playing at home, both teams failed to secure a maximum outcome. They will embark on a monumental mission to turn the situation around in the second leg or meeting. Recently, it has been rare for teams to salvage their fate in that phase.
Since the away goals rule was abolished in 2021, the second leg of matches has always been more challenging for teams that failed to win in the first leg. Out of 40 knockout stage matches in this season's Champions League, only Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund have successfully turned the challenge of the second leg into a ticket to advance to the next round.
PSG eliminated Liverpool through a penalty shootout after losing at home in the first meeting. Meanwhile, Dortmund, which drew with Lille in the first encounter, successfully advanced to the quarter-finals after winning in the second meeting.
A similar situation must be repeated for Arsenal and Barcelona, both of which failed to win at home. Arsenal lost 0-1 to PSG, while Barcelona drew 3-3 with Inter Milan at Camp Nou Stadium on Thursday (1/5/2025). Barcelona, which is usually formidable when playing at home, suddenly faltered. Inter easily scored quick goals, taking a two-goal lead without reply in the first half. Twice falling behind, Barcelona managed to equalize on both occasions.
Barca's coach, Hansi Flick, is aware that the second meeting will not be easy for his team. In this season's Champions League, Inter has consistently remained unbeaten every time they play at their home ground, the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.
"We did not start the match well. We experienced ups and downs. The second half was very spectacular. The second leg will be like a final," said Flick.
Flick's statement that the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals is akin to a final is not an exaggeration. This phase is indeed always challenging for any team.
A nearly similar opinion was also expressed by Manchester City Manager, Pep Guardiola, in 2021. According to Guardiola, the second semifinal meeting is very unforgiving. "From my experience, semifinals are always more difficult (than finals)," said Guardiola four years ago.
The second semifinal meeting felt more challenging due to the pressure from the results of the first encounter. The pressure intensified as each team was only one match away from the final. In this situation, the specter of failure would weigh much more heavily because the teams had already made significant efforts to advance to the semifinals.
"You are playing with the result of the first leg, you are playing with the thought that this is the final, final, final. Sometimes you can forget what you need to do. In my experience, the second leg of the semifinal is always the hardest. The final is truly different; it does not mean it is easier, it is actually completely different," Guardiola stated.
That statement strengthened the belief that the second meeting would be much more interesting. That is where Arsenal's remaining hopes of ending the season with their dream trophy are at stake. Meanwhile, for Barca, Inter must be defeated at all costs in order to maintain their hopes of winning the quadruple or four trophies in one season.
That's why Barca midfielder Raphinha regrets his team conceding three goals at home. Increasing anticipation of set pieces is one of Barca's priorities ahead of their trip to Milan. From that scheme, Barca was defeated twice by Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries.
“We tried to give our best and the important thing is that we got the result that made everything possible,” said Raphinha.
Meanwhile, Inter striker Marcus Thuram is confident that his team can contain Barca in Milan. What they need to be wary of are the maneuvers of Raphinha and, in particular, Lamine Yamal.
Yamal is an anomaly for Inter's layered defense. Despite the numerous Inter players who guard and limit his movements, Yamal always finds a way to break free. Yamal's actions also inspired the resurgence of "Blaugrana" after initially falling behind by two goals.
The optimism displayed by Raphinha and Thuram seems insignificant compared to that of Arsenal striker, Mikel Merino. While the statements from Raphinha and Thuram still carry a tone of hope, Merino, on the contrary, is very optimistic about defeating PSG at their home ground in the second meeting.
"Paris is a difficult place to visit, but we have always proven that we can compete with anyone and, with all due respect, I believe we will win the second match," said Merino. (AP)
