Through Haaland's sharpness and Cherki's vision, Manchester City successfully punished Bournemouth, who were provoked at the Etihad Stadium. It all started from Pep Guardiola's idea.

MANCHESTER, SUNDAY — High-level telepathy between striker Erling Haaland and midfielder Rayan Cherki was the highlight of Manchester City's victory over Bournemouth. Behind the brilliant performances of these two players, there was a trap set by City that successfully exploited the weaknesses of the visiting team.
Manager Pep Guardiola's decision to start Cherki from the beginning of the match at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Sunday (2/11/2025) proved to be correct. Although he last appeared as a starter in the Premier League at the end of August before his injury, Cherki inspired City's 3-1 victory with two assists.
The pair of assists were directed towards Haaland, who scored the home team's first two goals. "We all know his quality (Cherki). His job is indeed to bring out the best abilities of all the players. Today he provided two extraordinary assists for me, and I hope there will be more," said Haaland to Sky Sports.
Those two goals were enough to cause Bournemouth to lose momentum. The visiting team managed to equalize through midfielder Tyler Adams in the first half following Haaland's quick goal. However, just eight minutes later, City regained the lead thanks to the sharpness of their star striker.
The pair of goals from Haaland and Cherki truly showcased the top individual qualities of both players. Cherki delivered a through ball that broke the offside trap, while Haaland easily converted a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
Interestingly, the scheme was not a coincidence or mere instinct, but rather had been designed by Guardiola prior to the match. Upon closer examination, the two goals were created because City successfully capitalized on the aggressiveness and positional errors of the Bournemouth players while pressing without ball possession.

The statement from Bournemouth winger David Brooks can somewhat illustrate the reasons behind the goals. "We tried to press City. In the first half, we had a few opportunities through that. However, some small mistakes were detrimental to us. Haaland, who is tall and strong, always poses a threat. He capitalizes on opportunities well," he said.
Since last season until before the match, Bournemouth, coached by Andoni Iraola, has been the best team when it comes to playing without ball possession. They have a collective and aggressive defensive system that applies high pressure. As a result, they often regain possession of the ball in the opponent's half of the field.
Guardiola is aware of the threat. However, he remains determined to build attacks from the back. The difference is that the passes among the defenders are used to draw pressure from the visiting team. Once a gap is created in the opponent's midfield, they execute a lightning-fast counterattack. "We must be very coordinated to face that pressure," he stated.
In the first goal, the attack began with holding midfielder Nico Gonzales. At that moment, the Bournemouth players had activated high pressing. Gonzales broke the pressure with a lob pass to the unmarked Cherki in the midfield. Cherki only needed to head the ball to free Haaland alone in the opponent's half.
The defensive structure of Bournemouth changed during the second goal. The visiting team was playing a central block, somewhat defending deeper. However, City was still able to find that gap. Gonzales once again became the link in the attack. This time, the ball was passed to midfielder Phil Foden, who retrieved the ball.
Instead of holding the ball and acting alone, Foden immediately passed with a single touch to Cherki. Once again, Cherki managed to spot a gap in the opponent's defense and executed a through ball to Haaland. Haaland then ran freely without any marking, facing the opposing goalkeeper.

From those two goals, City truly capitalized on the aggressiveness of the Bournemouth squad. The main advantage of Iraola's team in applying pressure is the support from other players from unseen angles. This advantage became a weak point as City was able to execute the ball quickly before the opponent's assistance arrived.
A significant mistake was made twice in succession by Bournemouth's central defender Marcos Senesi. He attempted to move up to the midfield to pressure Cherki (the first goal) and Foden (the second goal), but was always late. Senesi instead created a large gap in the back line. "He (Haaland) punished us. Our defenders' decisions were not accurate," said Iraola.
City's victory was complemented by an additional goal from 20-year-old wing-back Nico O'Reilly in the middle of the second half. O'Reilly took advantage of the negligence of the Bournemouth players, who were more focused on attacking. Following that goal, Guardiola began to substitute in reserve players, including Tijjani Reijnders.
"Bournemouth is one of the most difficult teams to face, but we managed to find our rhythm and we were much better in many aspects today. This is their second defeat (in the league). Our defeats show that their team is that good," said Guardiola.
Through this result, City successfully dethroned Bournemouth from the second position in the temporary standings. Haaland and his teammates also managed to return to a positive trend after losing to Aston Villa last week. This serves as good capital before facing Liverpool at the Etihad next week. (AP/REUTERS)
