De Bruyne and Manchester City's departure at the end of the season is a certainty, but his performance at the Club World Cup remains a mystery.

If an ordinary person sees an impasse, Kevin De Bruyne perceives it as an opportunity. The creative midfielder can transcend space and time to solve problems. His vision at the highest level will remain timeless. However, such immortality does not apply to his physical body.
De Bruyne, 33 years old, has decided to leave Manchester City at the end of the season. He will not extend his contract, which is set to expire at the end of June 2025. The beautiful story of the past ten years between De Bruyne and City has reached its final chapter.
"I will get straight to the point and let you know that these will be my final months as a City player. It is not easy to write this, but as footballers, we know that a day like this will eventually come. That day has arrived," wrote De Bruyne on Friday (4/4/2025).
Among European football players, De Bruyne's age has not yet reached the retirement phase. However, his performance has drastically declined due to a series of injuries over the past two seasons. He has been sidelined for 195 days since the 2023-2024 season due to five different issues, two of which were thigh injuries.
This is a sad day (because we have to part ways). It is also a joyful day because we know what he has contributed. There is no need to discuss his role in our success.
At its peak, this season. De Bruyne has only started 12 times in the English Premier League. He last played as a starter when City faced Liverpool last February. His position has begun to be taken over by the young star Omar Marmoush, who was newly signed during the January transfer window.

It is understandable if De Bruyne chooses to part ways with City and leave the most competitive league. He has achieved everything, delivering 19 championship titles for "The Sky Blues," including the "treble winner" accomplishment in the 2022-2023 season. He played 413 matches, contributing 106 goals and 174 assists.
"I knew a few days ago," said City manager Josep Guardiola.
"It's a sad day (to say goodbye). It's also a happy day because we know what he has given us. There's no need to talk about his role in our success," he continued.
Guardiola hailed De Bruyne as one of the greatest midfielders to have ever played in England and believes it is only a matter of time before the club builds a statue of the KRC Genk academy product. De Bruyne and City are already inextricably linked.
De Bruyne is at the end of the road, but his journey is not over yet. City still have the FA Cup and the Club World Cup to play. The biggest and closest opportunity is in the FA Cup. As the only remaining “Big Six” team, De Bruyne and his colleagues have already entered the semi-finals.
The midfielder's participation in the Club World Cup remains a mystery. De Bruyne's contract expires on June 30, while the tournament in the United States runs from June 14 to July 13. If City continue to progress, they will only be able to use De Bruyne's services until the group stage.

The knockout phase, the round of 16, will run from June 28 to July 1 depending on the draw. When asked about the possibility of De Bruyne taking part, Guardiola was still hesitant to answer. "It's a good question, but I don't know. It's a new competition," he said.
"The club has to speak to him and he has to decide what he wants to do. Of course [it would be perfect to close at the Club World Cup]. It depends on Kevin, whether it is possible or not. I just hope it will not affect his contract in the future," Guardiola added.
City's negotiations and De Bruyne's commitment will be decisive. Previously, FIFA gave full responsibility to the club to find a solution related to the contract. The goal is to facilitate the participation of players whose contracts expire in the summer, mostly from European leagues.
Clubs were also given some leeway. In the Premier League, for example, the summer transfer window was opened twice. The first window was opened on June 1-10, usually early June, to facilitate the registration of players who would be participating in the Club World Cup.
According to The Athletic, FIFA also allows clubs to change their squads during the tournament, which runs from June 27 to July 3. This means that De Bruyne could only make it to the last 16, before being replaced by another player if they advance to the next round.

Despite all the speculation and puzzles, one thing is for sure. De Bruyne will still be with City for the next two months. That time is to be enjoyed and celebrated. "We will enjoy the last two months together. I am sure he will be filled with the love and recognition he deserves," Guardiola concluded. (AP/REUTERS)
