Danes Bargain to Buy California

President of the United States Donald Trump has offered to purchase Greenland, a territorial region of Denmark, to become part of the US. The reason is that Greenland is rich in mineral resources and its location is strategic for US defense positioning.

The intention sparked controversy, but a number of Danish citizens instead made a counteroffer: they wanted to buy the State of California in the US.

"You know what Denmark needs? Year-round sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates. We can make this dream a reality," reads a petition circulating in Denmark.

As of Wednesday (2/12/2025), the petition had garnered 200,000 signatures. The target is 500,000 signatures. The petition promises to bring hygge, or the Danish principle of happiness, to Hollywood.

"One of the national strategic interests is to promote Danish culture. Therefore, we will change the name of Los Angeles to Løs Angeles," the petition continued. The letter o in the word "los" is replaced with ø in accordance with the Danish script ligature.

In fact, California already has a "mini Denmark." This is the term for Solvang, a small town located about a 2-hour drive northwest of Los Angeles. Solvang was founded in 1911 by a community of immigrants from Denmark.

Solvang is also bustling with tourists. They want to see various houses and buildings constructed with traditional Scandinavian architecture. Local restaurants also serve typical Danish cuisine. Every time the Danish royal family visits the US, they always make time to stop by Solvang. (AP)
