The German national team ended a poor streak of three consecutive defeats. Nagelsmann's reaction changed the team's fortunes, particularly thanks to the presence of young striker Maximilian Beier.

COLOGNE, SUNDAY — The German national football team nearly faced another setback after a lackluster performance during the first hour against Northern Ireland. Fortunately, Coach Julian Nagelsmann was able to find a solution from the bench that successfully ignited an eruption from the "Panzer" in the last half hour of the match.
The German squad redeemed themselves on home soil, at the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne, on Monday (8/9/2025) early morning WIB. Three days after suffering a 0-2 defeat to Slovakia in the opening match of World Cup Group A qualification, Florian Wirtz and his teammates won 3-1 against Northern Ireland.
"We all know that the last match was a disaster and we want to rectify that today. We were less enthusiastic against Slovakia, but we played better today. Our performance was good and we are very satisfied," said Wirtz, the scorer of Germany's third goal through a free kick.
The final score reflects a comfortable victory for the home team. However, the reality on the field was quite the opposite. Germany struggled until the 60th minute, when the score was tied at 1-1, facing the energetic performance of the visiting team led by Liverpool's wing-back, Conor Bradley.
Nagelsmann immediately responded from the sidelines. He aimed for victory to heal Germany's wounds after suffering consecutive defeats in the last three matches. Two players in the attacking line, Nick Woltemade and Serge Gnabry, were replaced by Maximilian Beier and Nadiem Amiri.
The German formation did not change with the player substitutions, remaining at 3-4-2-1. However, the profiles of the players deployed were different, particularly Beier. The 22-year-old forward from Borussia Dortmund made numerous off-the-ball sprints to disrupt the structure of the opponent's three central defenders.

Woltemade, the new striker for Newcastle United, has been too passive. His contributions have been nearly invisible, aside from the assist for Gnabry's opening goal, which originated from a counter-attack after the opponent lost possession. The tall striker failed to produce a shot during the hour of play.
Less than ten minutes after Beier entered, Germany regained the lead 2-1 through a goal by Amiri. The goal originated from Beier's off-the-ball movement. Wing-back David Raum intended to deliver a cross to Beier, but the ball was too fast and fell to Amiri's feet. The Northern Ireland defense appeared to be in a state of panic.
Beier's presence also successfully pushed back the guest team's effective medium block. As a result, attacks from the second line led by Wirtz and Amiri became increasingly free.
Germany registered a total of 11 shots throughout the match, eight of which came after the 60th minute.
The eruption of the "Panser" team's performance was overwhelming. Just three minutes after taking the lead, their aggressiveness forced a foul by the opposing player in front of the penalty box. The free kick was executed perfectly by Wirtz, further extending the home team's advantage to 3-1.
Nagelsmann stated that the match demonstrated the importance of momentum. "The situation was not easy. The opposing team made us uncomfortable. Moreover, after conceding, we were somewhat hesitant. In the end, we deserved to win because we were able to return to our true form," he said.

Beier is a distinctive figure who emerged unexpectedly. Ideally, if not injured, veteran striker Niclas Fuellkrug would usually be the substitute. After last playing for the national team in September 2024, Beier has been trusted again due to the limited options in Germany's attacking line.
Beier's role is beginning to open the eyes of the coach. He is capable of being a problem-solving option for Germany in the upcoming international break. The "Die Mannschaft" is currently facing a crisis in the forward line due to long-term injuries affecting Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala.
Woltemade, since making his debut in the match against Portugal last June, has not scored in four matches. Germany has also suffered consecutive defeats in the previous three games. Meanwhile, Fuellkrug, who is a traditional striker, seems less suited to the fast-paced style of play typical of Germany.
The solution to the attack was accompanied by increasingly apparent issues in defense. Germany often loses focus and discipline in the middle of the match, as seen in the last two games. In the recent match, they were easily attacked by the visiting team in the 15 minutes leading up to halftime.
A series of attacks from Northern Ireland culminated in an equalizing goal from Isaac Price following a corner kick. The relentless assaults from the visiting team after the goal posed a threat to Germany, but they remained inefficient in the final touch. Northern Ireland, ranked 71st in the world, is primarily composed of players from the second division of the English League.
Germany can breathe a little easier with that first victory, but the journey to the World Cup is still long and winding. They currently occupy third place in the group (3 points), below Northern Ireland (3) and Slovakia (6). Only the group winner is entitled to qualify directly for the World Cup. (AP/AFP)
