SUWON, SUNDAY — Jonatan Christie holds championship titles from all levels of the BWF World Tour tournaments; however, the championship medal from the Korea Open Super 500 tournament holds significant meaning. Jonatan had to wait until the ninth month to secure his first title in 2025.
The Indonesian men's singles athlete won the Korea Open after defeating Anders Antonsen in the final held at Suwon Gymnasium, South Korea, on Sunday (28/9/2025). Jonatan triumphed over the top seed from Denmark with a score of 21-10, 15-21, 21-17.
Jonatan's victory ultimately became the only title for Indonesia as Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri were defeated. They lost to the home representatives, Seo Seung-jae/Kim Won-ho, in a tight match that lasted two games, 16-21, 21-23.
Moments after scoring the final point, Jonatan clenched his fist and shouted. He then looked up, pointing to the sky, while saying "Thank you," expressing his gratitude to the Almighty.
His gratitude is immense as the title of champion at the Korea Open marks the first for the 28-year-old athlete in 2025. Jonatan actually had the opportunity to win a tournament earlier this year by reaching the final of the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta in January; however, he lost to the athlete from Thailand, Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

The Korea Open title was won approximately 1.5 years after Jonatan's last title, which he secured at the Asian Championships in April 2024. This title was achieved after he triumphed at the All England a month prior.
All England, which is a Super 1000 level tournament, is the largest individual championship won by Jonatan. His victory over compatriot Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the final in Birmingham, England, completes the championship titles he has earned from Super 300, 500, and 750 tournaments.
Jonatan has won four championship titles from the Super 500 to 1000 levels between January 2023 and March 2024. Among the All England 2024 and the Korea Open 2025, the gold medalist in men's singles at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta Palembang has reached the finals three times but has always lost.
"This may not be the highest level tournament, but it means a lot to me. This title was achieved after a long struggle and was marked by injuries. A lot of time was spent on recovery, then getting sick again, and then recovering once more. I also had to find motivation and self-confidence again. And today, it has paid off. Thank you, God," said Jonatan.
Jonatan has been suffering from a right hip injury since the All England 2025, which has affected his movement, not only at the All England but also in subsequent tournaments. The challenge has become greater as he has to find a solution on his own to heal the injury since becoming an independent athlete.
After the mixed team championship of the Sudirman Cup in May, Jonatan resigned from the national training center as he wanted to balance his life as an athlete and as the head of a family with one child.
He formed his own team to accompany him in training and tournaments, one of whom is former national training athlete, Vicky Angga Saputra, who serves as the coach. Jonatan and Vicky come from the same club, PB Tangkas Jakarta. Additionally, there is also a physiotherapist, Rifky Maulana, who also accompanied him at the Korea Open.

Therefore, Jonatan expressed his gratitude to the team that supported him, especially during difficult times. Before competing in the Korea Open, Jonatan was eliminated five times in the early rounds of six championships. Only at the World Championship in France, from August 25 to 31, was he able to reach the quarter-finals while competing in a recovered condition.
"What my team and I have done is progressing quite well, proceeding as it should. Although the results have not been satisfactory in recent times, there has been progress. I am grateful to the team. This serves as a new motivation, a new chapter in my career," said the only son ranked sixth in the world.
Discussions with his team during the intervals of each game led Jonatan to victory after enduring a final that lasted one hour and 15 minutes, particularly in the third game which featured a tighter point contest. This game became a test for Jonatan and Antonsen as both adapted to the speed and direction of the wind.
They needed more time to adjust. The gusts of wind felt quite strong during the badminton match, making it difficult for Jonatan and Antonsen to play comfortably on one side of the court.

Antonsen struggled to control his shots and assess the shuttlecock's fall directed by Jonatan to the back of the court in the first game. In the second game, it was Jonatan's turn to experience that difficulty.
"In the deciding game, when I was ahead by one or two points, I became increasingly confident in applying the same strategy," said Jonatan, who left Antonsen after the score reached 11-11.
The motivation from winning the Korea Open will be carried by Jonatan to pursue many other goals. However, his immediate focus is to accumulate as many ranking points as possible after receiving unsatisfactory results in most tournaments. Jonatan can prove his determination in the Denmark Open, France Open, and Hylo Open in Germany, in October.
In the men's doubles, Fajar/Fikri lost again in two games to Seo/Kim, similar to their experience in the semifinals of the China Masters, a week before the Korea Open. This result came after they won in their first meeting that took place at the China Open, July 22-27. Fajar/Fikri concluded their journey in the Super 1000 tournament with the championship title.

After that, the real test was faced by the Indonesian athlete duo, both of whom played as forwards. They encountered the best version of Seo/Kim, who holds eight championship titles, including from the World Championship, before competing in the Korea Open.
In the meeting at Suwon Gymnasium, the high-level abilities of both pairs resulted in the most exciting final of the Korea Open this year. Fajar/Fikri scored many points from the initial one to four shots. However, the tactic of delivering lethal blows at the beginning is not always easy to execute, as Seo/Kim were able to anticipate well.
The top-ranked South Korean doubles team also possesses a defense that is difficult to break. They are able to return attacks, whether in the form of smashes or dropshots, even when the shuttlecock from Fajar/Fikri's shot is nearly touching the floor.
"Competing against those who are at the peak of their performance cannot rely solely on technique, physicality, and stamina. Focus and mindset must be prepared from the beginning to the end. Moreover, their quality is very good, both in defense, game variations, and focus. We have tried to implement tactics and strategies with optimal focus, but the result today was not in our favor," said Fajar.

In addition to Seo/Kim, the championship title for the host was secured in the women's doubles sector after Kim Hye-jeong/Kong Hee-yong defeated Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi 21-19, 21-12. These two titles in the doubles category compensated for the disappointment of the home crowd after the world's best women's singles player, An Se-young, was defeated by one of her strong rivals, Akane Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi's victory with a score of 21-18, 21-13 ended An's winning streak against her in three consecutive meetings earlier this year. An had won in the semifinals of the All England, Indonesia Open, and China Masters; however, Yamaguchi halted her with the tactical play she demonstrated when she became the world champion.
China secured the championship title in the mixed doubles category through a final match between compatriots. Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping triumphed over Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xing with scores of 25-23, 21-11.
