Four Arsenal players were the driving force behind England's victory over Andorra. The connection between "The Gunners" and "The Three Lions" has become a phenomenon that promises significant potential.

BIRMINGHAM, SATURDAY — It is common knowledge that the England national team has had little connection with Arsenal. The North London team is well-known for its preference for foreign players, especially in the early 21st century. However, that image faded instantly at Villa Park Stadium, Birmingham.
A rare sight was presented in the continuation of the Group K qualification for the 2026 World Cup, as England hosted Andorra on Saturday (6/9/2025 WIB). England's coach Thomas Tuchel fielded four Arsenal players simultaneously as starters, namely Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Noni Madueke.
As a context, no other club sent more than one representative in the first eleven of the "Three Lions." Interestingly, the scene was quite different compared to the first meeting between England and Andorra last June. At that time, there was not a single Arsenal player in the starting lineup.
Not only did they perform, but the players of "The Cannons" also played a significant role in England's 2-0 victory. England's opening goal came from an own goal by the opposing player Christian García, which originated from a cross by Madueke. Then, Rice doubled the lead with a header in the second half.
"Today we are better than the last time we met them. We are more fluid and should have been able to score more goals, but I am pleased with the collective performance of the team. When you face 11 players within 30 meters of the opponent's field, any team will struggle," said Madueke.
Arsenal players lead the statistics in several categories. Eze recorded the most shots on target (3), while Madueke created the most key passes (3). Meanwhile, Rice became the only English player to score at Villa Park.

Tuchel is pleased with the contributions from the ambassador of "The Cannon," but is not yet satisfied. Particularly regarding the combination of Eze and Madueke in the attacking line, which has not yet reached its full potential. Eze, as an attacking midfielder, and Madueke on the right wing often do not recognize each other's positions during offensive situations.
When that combination works well, England can pose a threat. For instance, at the beginning of the second half, when Eze nearly scored from inside the penalty area thanks to a pass from Madueke. "Perhaps Ebz (Eze) is not having his best day in the number 10 role. Noni's pass was also still lacking in clinical precision," said Tuchel.
It is understandable that the partnership between Eze and Madueke is still not cohesive. Both were recently brought in by Arsenal this summer. They have only played together once, during the match against Liverpool before the international break. Even then, it was for less than 20 minutes as Eze came on as a substitute.
According to Tuchel, the match was a warm-up for the upcoming schedule against Serbia. The starting eleven for England has a strong potential to be maintained. Eze and Madueke have the opportunity to perform better. "We learned a lot and I am proud of the players. We will prove ourselves in Belgrade," he stated.
Interestingly, the presence of many Arsenal players in the "Three Lions" squad for the qualifying match is just the beginning. Arsenal can send even more representatives. Some of their star players, such as Bukayo Saka and Ben White, are still absent during this international break due to injury.
The dominance of one club's representation in the national team could be beneficial for England at next year's World Cup. As is well known, players from the same club tend to have better chemistry. This is often a recipe for success for some countries, such as Spain, which is filled with players from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

At the beginning of the 21st century, Arsenal was more closely associated with the French national team. This was due to the influence of the French coach Arsene Wenger, who brought in many players from his home country. That image gradually faded after Wenger's departure, especially during the era of Mikel Arteta, who relies heavily on English players.
Anderson's debut
One of the standout performers in the match was midfielder Elliot Anderson. The debutant from Nottingham Forest justified Tuchel's trust by delivering a solid performance from the very first minute. He became the orchestrator of the "Three Lions" attack from the midfield.
England displayed a 4-2-3-1 formation. On paper, Anderson partnered with Rice as the anchor. However, Rice's role was to wait for the ball in the final third and receive it in the penalty area. Anderson more frequently retrieved the ball from deep and distributed it to the attacking line.
So energetic and with a high work ethic, the 22-year-old player seemed to be present on all sides of the field throughout the 90 minutes. Roy Keane, a former midfielder of the England national team, also praised the debutant's performance. According to him, not many players possess such vision and fighting spirit.
"Of course, it is not an easy match because he has a lot of control. I think about Bill Shankly's statement, the best way to assess a player is when they have possession of the ball. How they make decisions. From what I observed, he clearly can make an impact with his passes," praised Keane, as quoted by BBC Sport. (AP/REUTERS)
