Manchester United had to settle for a point against Tottenham despite performing almost flawlessly for over 80 minutes. The last ten minutes of the match changed everything.

LONDON, SATURDAY — Manchester United nearly avenged their Europa League final defeat last season against Tottenham Hotspur by replicating the approach of the opposing team. However, the mission of "The Red Devils" fell apart due to an absurd final ten minutes at the opponent's home ground.
Had the match been stopped in the 80th minute, United would have fully deserved all three points. However, entering injury time, the visitors would have been lucky to come away with a point. The dramatic match ended in a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, Saturday (November 8, 2025).
"Fortunately, we got one point. I feel we deserved more based on our performance. Their first goal was a bit lucky; I was somewhat annoyed by that, but I am proud of how the team fought back," said MU defender Matthijs de Ligt, who scored the equalizing goal in the 90+4 minute.
That goal was just one of many dramatic moments during the last ten minutes of the match. The drama began in the 84th minute, after Tottenham suddenly equalized through substitute player Mathys Tel. As De Ligt said, that goal had an element of luck.
Before entering the goal, Tel's shot deflected after hitting De Ligt's leg. The goal was quite surprising. Although continuously attacked, MU was actually still in full control with a very disciplined and organized defense. They were caught off guard in that one crucial moment.

Misfortune repeatedly struck the visiting team. A few minutes after conceding a goal, substitute striker Benjamin Sesko had a chance during a counterattack. However, not only did he fail to convert the opportunity, but he also sustained an injury as a result of that moment.
As a result, the team coached by Ruben Amorim had to play with ten players after Sesko left the field. MU had already reached the limit of five player substitutions. Shortly thereafter, Tottenham successfully took advantage of the player advantage by taking the lead with a goal from striker Richarlison.
As it seemed almost certain that they would return empty-handed, "The Red Devils" managed to secure a corner kick in the final minutes. The pass from team captain Bruno Fernandes was successfully utilized by De Ligt, who was unmarked at the far post. Both teams were thus forced to share the points.
"His feelings are about 50-50. We conceded one goal and we indeed lost (in the first half). In the second half, our reaction was good, we changed the game. Of course, we are also frustrated because we should have won today, but this is football," said Tel.
MU learned a lot from their defeat in the Europa League final in Bilbao last May. At that time, they lost 0-1 to Tottenham, who played very cautiously and more efficiently. "The Lilywhites," as Tottenham is nicknamed, managed to take the lead in the first half and simply maintained their advantage after the break.
Fernandes and his teammates were reluctant to be caught off guard again in the first half. They did not play too openly and opted to wait more. This patience paid off. When they found the momentum, they succeeded in taking the lead through a header from striker Bryan Mbeumo.

MU borrowed knowledge from Tottenham in Bilbao. They nearly focused solely on maintaining their lead after halftime. In fact, the visiting team managed to produce only one shot throughout the second half, aside from the goal from De Ligt. Meanwhile, Tottenham generated seven shots during the second 45 minutes.
Amorim stated that his team was unfortunate. In addition to Sesko, they also lost defender Harry Maguire and midfielder Casemiro due to injuries. Their defensive structure was somewhat disrupted after the loss of these two players. "The match was very complicated, especially towards the end," he said.
The management of player substitutions became a distinguishing factor for the home team. While MU was forced to replace two players due to injuries, Tottenham coach Thomas Frank was able to maximize five substitutions in the second half. He brought on Tel, Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Wilson Odobert, and Kevin Danso.
Three of the five substitutes made an instant impact. Tel scored the equalizing goal with an assist from Udogie. Meanwhile, Odobert provided the assist for Tottenham's second goal. They were able to avoid three consecutive home defeats.
"I am not disappointed by the goal conceded with one minute remaining, but I want to focus on the good performance in the second half. I am very pleased that we put up a fight in a match where both teams were unable to create many opportunities. Both teams neutralized each other," explained Frank, who is proud of the players' efforts. (AP/REUTERS)
