JAKARTA, KOMPAS - Tropical cyclone Senyar has weakened and is moving away from Sumatra Island towards the Malacca Strait. Nevertheless, indirect impacts in the form of extreme weather still need to be anticipated for the next two days.
The Director of Public Meteorology at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Andri Ramdhani, stated in Jakarta on Thursday (November 27, 2025) that Cyclone Senyar's strength has begun to decline to the low or weak category. "However, its indirect impact on weather patterns still requires vigilance, at least for the next two days," he said.
According to BMKG data, the position of Cyclone Senyar on Thursday morning was still over the eastern part of Aceh, at 3.7 degrees North Latitude and 99.2 degrees East Longitude, or approximately 60 km northeast of Medan. This cyclone is moving eastward at a speed of 5 knots or 10 km per hour.
On Thursday afternoon, the cyclone was located in the Malacca Strait, east of Aceh at coordinates 4.4° N, 97.3° E, or approximately 180 km west-northwest of Medan. The cyclone continues to move eastward, away from Indonesian territory at a speed of 25 knots or 46 km per hour.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that Tropical Cyclone Senyar's maximum wind speed will continue to decrease over the next 24 hours. The cyclone will become a tropical depression, or a cyclone seed, moving eastward away from Indonesian territory.
The Head of the Special Weather Prediction and Early Warning Team at BMKG, Miming Saepudin, stated that under this situation, Cyclone Senyar could still trigger very heavy to extreme rainfall in the regions of Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra until Friday (28/11/2025). Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in the Riau region. Meanwhile, strong winds could occur in the regions of Aceh and North Sumatra.
Moderate wave heights (1.25 - 2.5 m) may occur in the Malacca Strait, waters from Tamiang to Langsa, waters from North Aceh to East Aceh, waters from North Pidie Jaya to Aceh Besar, waters from Sabang to Banda Aceh, waters from Aceh Besar to Meulaboh, waters from Southwest Aceh to Simeulue, waters from Aceh Singkil to Pulo Banyak, southern waters of Simeulue, eastern waters of North Sumatra, western waters of North Sumatra, waters of the Nias Islands, waters of the Batu Islands, waters of West Sumatra, and waters of Riau. Meanwhile, high wave heights (2.5 - 4 m) may occur in the Indian Ocean from West Aceh to the Nias Islands.

The movement of Cyclone Senyar towards the mainland has previously triggered extreme rainfall in the Aceh region. Data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicates that rainfall with an intensity of 310 mm per day was recorded at the Malikussaleh Meteorological Station in North Aceh this morning.
Meanwhile, at Maimun Saleh Meteorological Station, Sabang recorded 162 mm of rainfall per day, and at Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station, Aceh Besar, 147 mm per day. Rainfall intensity above 150 mm per day is categorized as extreme.
The high intensity of rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Aceh. The Head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, stated that flooding has once again struck the city of Lhokseumawe, Aceh Province. Water accumulation has been reported evenly across four sub-districts, covering a total of 43 villages.
