There have been suggestions to restrict the movement of cats. This is to protect Scotland's wildlife. A suggestion that has sparked anxiety and anger.

EDINBURGH, WEDNESDAY — The Scottish government has a major announcement to make to keep the public calm. It's about cats.
Scottish First Minister John Swinney made the announcement. “I am clear today, the government will not ban cats or restrict cats. We have no intention of doing that and we will not do that,” he said, as reported by the Associated Press on February 4, 2025.
The assertion was delivered because there was anxiety in the public. The anxiety was triggered by a statement by an animal expert that cats threaten the lives of wildlife. The government is advised to make policies to control the impact.
After that, the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission said cats kill at least 700 million birds and other animals across the UK. That number is recorded every year.
The commission recommended that the government impose restrictions on cats, including confining them to homes. There are also suggestions for restrictions on keeping cats in areas considered to be the habitat of endangered species.
The suggestion has, of course, sparked outrage. The Daily Mail said there was anger over the potential cat ban in Scotland. The Scottish Daily Express called the ban a "crazy scheme."
Cats Protection, a British cat rights group, is trying to come up with a compromise. Cats are locked up from dusk until dawn. “Scotland is a cat-loving nation,” said Alice Palombo, government relations officer for Cats Protection. (AP)
