Bruno Fernandes has once again proven himself to be the most creative player currently in the English Premier League, and perhaps in the world. Manchester United enjoys his role as a "quarterback."

MANCHESTER, SUNDAY - In American football, the quarterback is the most valuable player. As the brains of the attack and the driving force behind the ball, they play a significant role in the team's success. One player who plays such a significant role in football is Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
The charm of Fernandes shone once again at Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester, on Sunday (16/3/2026 WIB). He inspired a 3-1 victory for MU over top-four rival Aston Villa with two assists. The high-level creativity and precise passes from the team captain made a significant difference in that crucial match.
Fernandes has now recorded 16 assists in the league. This number has successfully broken the club record for the most assists previously set by legendary player David Beckham in the 1999-2000 season (15 assists). He has the potential to break the league record of 20 assists, with eight weeks remaining.

"I am more proud and satisfied because I can serve my colleagues. Bringing joy to others is also very good," said Fernandes when asked about his new record. "That is a significant achievement for me, but the main goal is for us to finish at the top of the table at the end of the season," he continued.
Fernandes' role is very similar to that of a quarterback. When United want to execute an attack, the other players immediately look for Fernandes. After that, he immediately looks for a gap in the opposing defense. The Red Devils' attackers, such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, immediately run to open up space.
The creativity of the Portuguese national team player successfully facilitated the team's attacks throughout the match. Fernandes created six chances, nearly half of Manchester United's total chances (13). Two out of three of the home team's significant opportunities also originated from his feet. When given the ball, he seems capable of turning stone into gold.
Fernandes has been creative since the first minute, but his assist could only be utilized after halftime. He contributed an assist for the opening goal scored by midfielder Casemiro from a corner kick. That goal proved that Fernandes can create opportunities from any situation, whether in open play or set pieces.
MU briefly lost momentum in the middle of the second half. Villa took control of the game and then equalized with a goal from midfielder Ross Barkley. In the 15 minutes following MU's lead, the visiting team managed to dominate possession (63.1 percent) as well as the number of shot attempts (5-1).
Finally, Fernandes unleashed a magical moment in the 71st minute. From the left flank, near the halfway line, he sent a through ball to Cunha. The pass broke the opponent's offside trap. Cunha made no mistake about the special treat. The home team took a 2-1 lead, breaking Villa's morale.

Interim coach of MU, Michael Carrick, was amazed by Fernandes' contribution throughout the 90 minutes. "He had so many great moments, scoring goals or providing assists, and he was always there. The pass to Matheus was fantastic and complemented his overall good performance," said Carrick.
For context, Fernandes was able to record that number of assists while playing as a defensive midfielder for more than half a season. He played that less common position during the era of coach Ruben Amorim. Since Carrick's arrival, Fernandes has been given a freer role with a more advanced position compared to before.
That is what has made Fernandes increasingly prominent lately. He has produced 2 goals and 8 assists in eight league matches. The number of assists is equal to his total achievements during the Amorim era. This figure is also the same as that of the second-highest assist provider in the league after Fernandes, Manchester City midfielder Rayan Cherki (8).
The victory was capped off with a goal from substitute striker Benjamin Sesko. Although he wasn't a starter like in the previous two matches, Sesko once again showed his inner "supersub." All five of Sesko's goals during the Carrick era came as a substitute.
Thanks to this result, MU is currently comfortably in third place in the temporary standings with 54 points. They are beginning to distance themselves from their competitors, namely Villa (51), Liverpool (49), and Chelsea (48). "We did a lot of good things and finished the match correctly. We realize that it is very important to get back on the winning track," said Carrick.
The villa, which was once in contention for the championship title at the halfway point, is now in a downward spiral. They are on a trend of three consecutive losses in the league. "A poor result. Yes, we lost due to our own mistakes. We should have been better at controlling the ball. Of course, MU is currently at a high level and difficult to defeat," explained Villa's Coach Unai Emery.
