Liverpool's Five Star Metamorphosis by Arne Slot

In his farewell speech as Liverpool Manager, May 2024, Juergen Klopp, invited hundreds of thousands of Liverpool supporters who filled Anfield Stadium to start wetting their lips with songs for Arne Slot, Klopp's successor. In just 12 months, Slot's name echoed from the mouths of Liverpool to celebrate the Premier League title after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1, Sunday (27/4/2025).

Not to be missed, the first sentence delivered by Slot during the interview session as the champion of the English League was to guide the supporters in chanting for Klopp. This was Slot's way of expressing gratitude to Klopp, who helped him feel warmly welcomed amidst the windy climate of Liverpool.

“(The feeling is) extraordinary. I want to express my appreciation to Juergen Klopp. ‘Juergen Klopp lala…lalala…’,” said Slot, followed by a roar from the stands of The Kop.

That appreciation reflects Slot's acknowledgment that it is not easy to lead "The Reds." He arrived at Liverpool with a significant burden. The tactician, who resides in Zwolle, Netherlands, is overshadowed by Liverpool's transformative performance under Klopp over the past nine seasons.

The highly charismatic slot has already won the hearts of Liverpool supporters. One championship title and a Champions League trophy are the legacies left by the German coach. Klopp is also scheduled to attend as the main guest at the trophy presentation celebration during the final match against Crystal Palace on May 25, at Anfield.

With all due humility, Slot also wishes to invite Klopp to celebrate the championship title together with his former protégé. Klopp and Slot are symbols of the return of supremacy for the Reds in the realm of England.

Although managing a team inhabited by Klop, Slot is not actually relaxing. The title of this season's Premier League champions proves his skill in elevating the Liverpool players to a different level. What not everyone thought could be achieved by Slot, not even his players before they met in the preseason session in Pittsburgh, United States, July 2024.

Slot is present to refine the efforts that Klopp has left behind. During Slot's initial meeting with some players in Pittsburgh, he immediately conducted one-on-one discussion sessions. Slot gathered several video clips of the actions of Liverpool players during the 2023-2024 season.

In that session, he provided notes for improvement and evaluation to enhance the performance of the Red team players. The session was also interactive. Slot opened the opportunity for his players to discuss their playing style and the ideal positions they wished to play under his management.

Slot, along with his staff, also regularly holds weekly meetings with the players. The purpose of these meetings is to expedite the transformation process in line with Slot's ideas. This approach has proven effective in accelerating the new breath of Liverpool under Slot, even though the new squad gathered in full just 13 days before the opening game of this season against Ipswich Town.

"He (Slot) speaks the truth to everyone. Mo (Salah), Virgil (van Dijk), all the players if they make a mistake. All the players think: 'Oh, he watches me every day, he watches me in every training session. So I have to give 2,000 percent," said center-back Ibrahima Konate, as reported by The Guardian.

Salah, who is having his best individual season, also tipped his hat to Slot's performance. Slot's openness, continued the "King of Egypt," is the key to Liverpool's ability to secure their 20th English League title.

"He is very honest. He is Dutch, a type of person who is difficult to understand, but he makes our lives easier because he asks for what he wants straight away," Salah, who has scored 28 goals and assisted 18 in the league, told Sky Sports.

When asked about the differences between Klopp and Slot, Salah responded, “It is difficult to express one thing, but their tactics are different. I told him (Slot), ‘as long as you reduce my defensive burden, I will be better offensively,’ I am happy to be able to do that. This change in roles is certainly the manager's idea, but he listens a lot to us.”

Gakpo also did not miss the opportunity to provide a testimonial about the manager. "Tactically, the coach helps us move to another level. The ideas align well with the players we have at the moment. Hopefully, we can improve even more in the coming years," said Gakpo, who contributed nine goals in the English League, as quoted by the BBC.

Securing the championship title with four matches remaining is an extraordinary achievement for Slot. He improved Liverpool from third place in the final season with Klopp. Although there was an influence from the decline in Manchester City's performance this season, the Reds demonstrated dominance based on significant improvements in collective performance.

An average of 2.4 goals per match is already an improvement from 2.3 goals last season. The conversion rate of shots by Liverpool players has surged from 10.9 percent to 13.5 percent.

Although the average ball possession decreased from 61 percent to 58 percent, the passing accuracy of Liverpool players saw a slight improvement. This season, the passing accuracy of Dominik Szoboszlai and his teammates stands at 86 percent, while last season recorded a successful passing rate of 85 percent.

In terms of defense, Si Merah has already accumulated 14 matches without conceding a goal. This figure has increased compared to 10 matches without conceding during the 2023-2024 competition campaign.

"He came in and stamped his authority. The team became more united as a defensive unit, so what he did in a short space of time was amazing. There was no expectation (of winning the title), but Slot achieved it with four games to spare," former Liverpool player Daniel Sturridge told Sky Sports.

The achievement of the English Premier League title in the inaugural season places Slot alongside two legendary Liverpool managers, namely Joe Fagan in 1983-1984 and Kenny "King" Dalglish in the 1985-1986 season. Referring to the Premier League era, Slot is now on par with great managers such as Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, and Manuel Pellegrini.

With Slot helping them to a 20th league title, Liverpool's iconic liver bird has metamorphosed into the greatest English team of all time.
