The triangular transfer domino effect between Manchester City, Tottenham, and Bournemouth has become the hottest rumor in the January transfer market. This is just one of many other puzzles.

MANCHESTER, TUESDAY - The January transfer window is about to open in the English League. Although they have just broken the record for the largest spending in the summer, English clubs are already ready to shop again. Rare opportunities, performance, and injuries are factors influencing activity in this transfer market.
The transfer window will open on Thursday (1/1/2026) and will last until February 2. As the opening approaches, the hottest rumor points to Bournemouth winger, Antoine Semenyo. He is being targeted by many clubs due to his impressive performance, recording 9 goals and 3 assists in the league this season.
The situation of Semenyo is considered special. Bournemouth cannot retain him due to a release clause of 65 million pounds sterling (Rp 1.47 trillion) that comes into effect in January. Other clubs are welcoming him. That price is relatively low in the current free transfer market.
Last season, I never expected to enter the transfer market (January) and purchase four to five players. This year, everything is open.
Manchester City, according to Sky Sports, is the leading candidate to sign the 25-year-old winger. City are already in negotiations with the player. Semenyo's representatives are reportedly in Manchester this Tuesday to finalize a long-term contract.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola does not actually have a pressing need for new players. The team's performance, currently in second place in the standings, is on a positive trend. Their players are also free from injuries. However, the transfer feels too good to pass up.
"Anything can happen," said Guardiola when asked about the rumors regarding the arrival of Semenyo and other new players in January. "Last season, I never expected to enter the transfer market (in January) and buy four to five players. This year, everything is open," he continued.
Last season, City spent £189 million (Rp 429.2 billion) to bring in five players simultaneously during the mid-season. Some of them have become key players for the team currently, including defensive midfielder Nico Gonzalez and attacking midfielder Omar Marmoush.
If realized, the transfer of Semenyo and City has the potential to create a triangular domino effect with other clubs. Tottenham Hotspur continues to monitor the availability of City winger, Savinho. Savinho's position is certainly threatened with Semenyo capable of playing on both flanks simultaneously.
Tottenham has shown interest in Savinho since the summer. They even made an offer, but it was rejected by City. The team, coached by Thomas Frank, needs a refresh in the attacking line after only managing to secure the 11th position so far.

Tottenham is also pursuing Semenyo. However, the player is more interested in joining City. "We will definitely see what can be done once the window opens. However, we need something that can enhance the quality of the squad. If not, we will wait," said Frank.
Bournemouth is also moving quickly to anticipate the departure of Semenyo. They are targeting Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson, who has only started six times in the league this season. If the domino effect of Semenyo continues to Tottenham, Bournemouth could facilitate that plan.
In the January window, transfers are more complex compared to the summer season. Each club will think carefully before selling players. With the market open for only a month, it is very difficult to find replacement players. Domino effects, such as those that could potentially occur with Bournemouth, City, and Tottenham, are also common.
English Premier League clubs have just set a record for the largest spending in the past summer, amounting to £3.08 billion (Rp 69.8 trillion). The club with the highest expenditure is Liverpool, which broke the record for the most expensive player purchase through forward Alexander Isak.
Regardless of that fact, summer expenditures do not automatically affect activities in the mid-season transfer market. Clubs like Liverpool, which spent around Rp 9.3 trillion, still need to make purchases. They are targeting additional players in the defensive line.
Liverpool coach Arne Slot stated that injuries have altered the club's initial plans. "I think many people have been talking about the amount of money we spent in the summer. However, due to injuries, not all the money we spent can be utilized effectively," he said.

An example is center-back Giovanni Leoni and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. Leoni must remain sidelined until the end of the season due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, Frimpong has only started five times due to recurring thigh muscle issues.
The rumors regarding Liverpool's closeness to Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi have intensified. Liverpool nearly brought Guehi to Anfield Stadium last season, but the transfer was canceled at the deadline due to a request from Palace's coach Oliver Glasner. Guehi's contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026. (AP/REUTERS)
